All of my problems started after an unrelated ailment back in August of this year.

Here's the blow-by-blow: (I'm a 35 year old female, normal weight, no other health problems)

August 16 my breast felt very tender and when I pressed on it, noticed a palm sized lump that hadn't been there the day before. I felt feverish and went to bed hoping that I'd wake up and it would be gone. It wasn't. I saw my GP that day and was diagnosed with Mastitis with a concern of Inflammatory Breast Cancer. I've never had children, never breast-fed. They prescribed me Augmentin 500mg and scheduled me for a mammogram and ultrasound. I was extremely stressed out and for the next two weeks I couldn't bring myself to eat more than a piece of bread here or there. Before it was all over (diagnosed with a ruptured breast cyst that had abscessed inside my milk duct) I had lost 10#'s and was very weak and sick feeling.

The first few days of the antibiotics I had explosive, purely liquid diarrhea. After that nothing, probably because I wasn't eating. I developed a sore, itchy throat and what I believe to be a slight yeast infection involving my anus and vulva, probably throat too. The area down there swelled up and itched like crazy. My stomach hasn't been the same since.

Within a week, I began to notice that I was constantly nauseated a week after that, I started noticing the sensation of a lump in my throat, just below where a man's Adam's Apple would be and just above the indentation between the collar bones. This lump feeling just wouldn't go away. I also hadn't had a bowel movement since the bout with diarrhea.

I kept going back to complain about the vertigo and constipation and they ran CBC after CBC, SED rate, Kidney Function, Electrlytes, Thyroid, you name it. All came back well within range. I eventually ended up having a brain MRI which only showed an atretic left vertebral artery, which the Radiologist declared to be 'normal'. They prescribed me Miralax for the constipation which didn't work. They told me to take Magnesium Citrate, which didn't work. They had me take Senna, which didn't work. By the end of the month I was so bound up, having only 3 bowel movements in 4 weeks that I literally looked and felt like I was about to pop. I had no pain, just a distended abdomen and pressure up under my ribcage. This happened to me the last time I quit smoking so they decided that I just have slow peristaltic motion. I became so uncomfortable that I began smoking again and slowly, my bowels started moving, but they have not felt the same since August and the Augmentin.

The week before Thanksgiving I had a terrible migraine and vomited several times on an empty stomach. After the vomiting episode was when things began to get hinky with my digestion again. I immediately got the lump sensation back in my throat that seemed to appear just after I've eaten. This lasted for about a week and then I started getting a constant regurgitation of food into my throat. I also began noticing an extreme amount of gas building up after eating.

I wake up hoarse in the mornings and I seem to have a constant low grade sore throat. Over the past week the symptoms have changed and now I'm in nearly constant distress.

I wake up in the morning and I feel fine minus the sore throat. I have no lump in my throat, I have no bloating, no chest pressure. I drink my morning coffee and then notice the lump feeling. After lunch at work, it's not that bad. But after supper! OMG! It's horrible. The lump in my throat starts to feel like a constriction and the pressure from my sternum to my collarbone is crazy. It goes away after I burp but is soon back. It's like I'm producing mass quantities of gas. I also feel like my esophagus (not windpipe) is swelling up through my throat after I eat. Feels fine going down but within minutes I get this awful squeezing sensation. I have no trouble breathing, just a constriction of my food pipe and only just after I eat and for the next, say hour. It eventually goes away, but only after a prolonged period of discomfort. I could literally eat just a chocolate chip and my stomach starts churning and making gas. It's weird and annoying and starting to make me not enjoy eating anymore. I also am noticing that sometimes the gas feels like it's not whole bubbles, but rather a foam that's hard to get up.

So here it is in a nutshell:

After the 8/16 round of Augmentin...and 11/20 round of vomiting...

Sensation of lump in throat
constant, slight sore throat
hoarseness
extreme upper gastric gas after eating, most times in tiny bubble form
extreme pressure extending from sternum to throat after eating
food coming up into the back of my mouth long after eating
sensation of esophagus swelling after eating
really thick, impossible to swallow mucus in throat after eating
sour taste in mouth that is probably stomach contents coming back up

Yesterday I at two pieces of homemade bread and was fine for the most part. But later on that night I have a small bit of vanilla icecream and hot fudge and felt like an alien was going to burst out of my chest. It took about an hour for that pressure, gas, bloating, lump and swelling feeling to go away.

This might seem minor in comparison to other problems you read about, but I'm just tired of the endless parade back and forth to the Dr.'s after the breast incident. Have any of you experienced similar problems? And if so, what would you recommend?

  • I, too, have gas pressure day after day, which if I'm very careful with eating, I may get over before the end of the day. I have "slow belly" or "lazy bowel" as my dad called it, and I have delayed stomacy emptying (gastroparesis). I am seeking a medicine that will force my stomach to empty. I suspect I may have a duodenal ulcer but can't get to a GI doctor for a few weeks.I must eat prune juice every morning with 1/8th teaspoon of Benefiber. My grandma had a habit of drinking tepid water first thing, but I just got that nasty pressure this morning so I don't know what to say about tepid water, first thing. What could be more neutral than water? I cannot drink coffee, how can you? I have no complete solution, but I read that I should avoid most fats and oils until I'm healed because they delay stomach emptying. Also, I should avoid fiber because it does the same delaying and also generates gas pressure.Meanwhile I hope you find comfort and discover how to live with your condition. All of my problems started after an unrelated ailment back in August of this year. Here's the blow-by-blow: (I'm a 35 year old female, normal weight, no other health problems)August 16 my breast felt very tender and when I pressed on it, noticed a palm sized lump that hadn't been there the day before. • Your problem seems to be very extreme and it is very important for you to please talk with the GI so that he will guide you properly and above all help you in eating balance food so that you will not face any problem with the diet you will take. Please, be very specific about your problems in front of the doctor dont hide anything. Thanks

  • This is a old thread but still hoping to get a reply. Did you ever get answers to your esophagus issues? I am dealing with the same things right now and everyone is perplexed. Appreciate any input.
