PCOS and Thyroid Conditions

I went to my doctor to discuss my difficulty with losing weight and found out that I have multiple nodules on my thyroid. I am having a thyroid uptake scan to find out more. My doctor believes that my hormone levels also show a possibility for Polycystic Ovary syndrome. Could the 2 things be related? The symptoms for hypothryroidism are similar to PCOS...how can I be sure to get the right diagnosis?

  • It is possible to have both; an ultrasound can check for PCOS as well as androgen level tests. There are a lot of other symptoms for PCOS that are not the same as for hypothyroid, such as growing excess body hair, and menstrual disturbances. When I had my ultrasound my ovaries had so many cysts that they were bigger than my uterus :-/Being overweight from thyroid problems could worsen PCOS symptoms since apparently PCOS can lessen if you manage to lose the weight. I have both PCOS and Hypothyroidism and I can't shift any weight but at least now that I am on thyroid replacement I'm not gaining weight any more. Metformin plus careful diet (including eating small amounts more often) plus exercise is supposed to help. My doctor recommended "10,000 steps per day" but I have had trouble achieving this! Good luck with finding a diagnosis.
