Swelling around the eyes

Hi there

For about 5-6 months I have had swelling around my eyes. It has gone beyond puffiness; there is pressure on the eyeballs from the swollen tissue, the inside corners (ie the bit on the nose) is blistering on bad days. I am getting pockets of swelling forcing there way over the orbital bone onto my cheeks.

I have had allergy tests and am non-reactive to all of the RAST substances. I found out that I am allergic to casein (extremely) cane sugar (moderately) and mildly reactive to a few other foods. I have stopped all those. (Never had any noticeable reaction to milk products!)

I noticed I was reacting more after eating fish - and have stopped all fish products weeks ago, tho it turns out I am not allergic. But the symptoms are still worsening.

I have gone without makeup & alcohol; have tried dust mite covers on the bed. Nothing is helping. Antihistamines seem to make it worse.

I have been to the eye specialist - and beyond confirming the swelling and noting that the eyeballs are slightly swollen, he doesn't know what is wrong - he guessed thyroid. GP is stymied.

I have now been for CBC and thyroid test. Thyroid is normal. But platelets are low, and mean platelet volume is high. Everything else was in normal range.

I am hypermobile, but otherwise my general health is good. I sleep well, am energetic, eat well, don't smoke, take no medication, moderate drinker, no illicit drugs, exercise regularly, am 45 years old, female, 5'4" and 130 pounds.

Anybody out there have any ideas?

Thanks for your attention.

  • I have been having extreme swelling of my upper eye lids and below my eyes. It has been getting worse over the course of the past seven or eight months. I now have dark circles under my eyes. I have also been experiencing digestive problems. I wake up feeling dehydrated. My throat , nasal passages, and mouth are all dry when I wake. I am drinking excessive amounts of water through the night. My symptoms seem much worse when I eat foods containing flour/sugar/wheat or any foods that would absorb a lot of moisture in digestion. Do you have any of these additional symptoms ? My thyroid test came back normal. The funny thing is that when I wake and am up for a few hours the swelling starts to go down . It is a vicious cycle and is causing deep lines under my eyes. I have been searching all different types of causes of swelling around the eyes. Have you ever had tonsillitis? My swelling seemed to start around the same type I had first noticed I had chronic tonsillitis, but my doctors say there is no connection. I am still looking for answers. Wish you well.

  • Hi Christina I am not having any of those other symptoms - I am sorry for you! I know how much the eye swelling alone is bothering me! My swelling does go down through the day - but over time I notice the swelling is worse and it takes longer to go down. I have saggy skin on upper and lower eyelids that now seems to be permanent. Have you had any tests related to your kidneys? That is one of the things we are looking at now. Hang in there! MB

Your symptoms sound like a condition called Thyroid Eye Disease or TED.Here's more information on the symptoms:http://graves.medshelf.org/SymptomsNormal is a setting on your dryer. Get copies of your test results and find out for yourself if it's normal. It took me a while to learn this and now I literally have all my medical records in notebook using page protectors. I look back and see what doctors said was "normal" was borderline. So much for normal. And with thyroid disease, borderline could mean symptoms and being quite ill. With TED, you may or may not have thyroid disease yet.Find a good ophthalmologist with TED and glaucoma experience.

  • My god! My symptoms and life are almost identical. I have developed large bags under my eyes and some days have what is best described as a "water blister" on my cheek bone under my left eye. A clinic doctor told me it's because I'm a stomach sleeper (which I've been for 45 years!) Gone thru the battery of tests and visited the eye doctor. No help from anywhere and am now contemplating vising a plastic surgeon. I've done the elimination, the cleanses, the hypo allergetic, antihistimine every night, natural diet, change your life routine and, honestly, I'm at my wits end. My concern is what is causing these and how to stop them from coming back. It's easy enough to have surgery to get rid of them, but I want to know where they are coming from so they don't come back!

  • Without wishing to make this thread any larger than it is , I too have some similar sounding eye problems and please excuse my joining the thread but makes it easier perhaps for someone to diagnose.I had no problems with my eyes apart from wearing contact lenses. I then went into hospital in late January 2008. I had operation for hernia and to remove a lymph node for biopsy (it was clear !). I had a CT scan during that stay and then 1 week after leaving hospital at very end of January 2008 I had a barium meal and xray. Then in around mid February 2008 I noticed I had very red eyes upon waking in morning. Was also fatigued. Then the eyes seemed to get worse and started looking like I had not slept for weeks . I have never ever had bags under eyes but now seem permamant. Also very noticeble is that I now have dry eyes and the corners of each eye are dried up. Have had blood tests for everything conceivable but all negative apart from a small up and down of Liver LT test. They did ultrasound test of liver and said there are signs of fatty deposits which could be answer to the LT tests but nothing major.Only other thing I recall is that on last day in hospital I was given water to wash face in that was in a plastic bowl and wonder if I caught something ?So can someone please opine as what may be the cause ?. Perhaps the CT scan caused it with all radiation ?. Maybe the water I washed with in hospital was not clean ?.p.s. should say the severe eye redness is there upon waking but after 1 hour of being up has gone, but dryness and bags remain all day and night.ThanksJP

  • Have you found any cure yet?I have same exact problem.ThaksHi thereI have the same problem with swelling right along the left cheek bone. It comes and goes, and is more noticeable in the mornings. I am taking antihistamines every night, and don'tknow if they are working or not. In Feb on this year, my entire face swole up like a balloon, and it started with the same cheek. Back and forth to the doctor, was told it was something i had changed,,,,not!! then to the allergist who said it had to be my make up..NOT!!! but i am at my wits end. I have an appointment to see a dermatologist at the beginning of July, but i can guess what he will have to say...not much. It is very annoying and depressing..I am healthy, 53, and mad!!
