Patti with an eye

I was diagnosed with ICE about 17 years ago after noticing changes in vision in my left eye. It took several years before it was diagnosed. The first couple years were no big deal, until the pressure started to go up. Then I was sent to a glaucoma specialist. Drops didn't work. He put in a trabec - the pressure dropped to almost zero - and we had to go back again to adjust some stitches. Pressure went up to 40s and 60s. The pressure finally stabilized after a long process, but only for about 6 months - then back up again. A second trabec was tried. It lasted about a year. Next, I was sent to Cleveland Clinic to Dr. Baerveldt - the inventor of the Baerveldt Valve implant. He put it in and the pressure has been under 20 for 12 years now!

Now the cornea is shot and I need a transplant. My vision has not been good in that eye for about 10 years - my right eye does all the work. The cornea is so fogged up that I can only see light and some shapes out of the left eye. I went to Ann Arbor today to find out about a cornea transplant/cataract removal. The prognosis was not good. The dr. said that he would do the transplant to take away the pain from the blisters, but any surgery on the eye would stir up the ICE and get the pressure out of whack again. He said it is typical of ICE to also make the transplant more likely to fail. He does not feel that my vision will be improved after the transplant/cataract removal.

Anyone else out there with words of wisdom on your experiences?

  • If you're in Michigan, I in Chelsea 20 miles west of Ann Arbor. I don't have ICE, but I have had 3 corneal transplants. Vison in both eyes, basically colors and shapes. Any I wish you well if you decide to go through with the transplant. I did have interoccular (sp?) Implants when I had my cataract surgery. Now my vision is much better.
