  • Does anyone know how eye gunk is created, the sand in your eyes in the morning. How does it develop and whats its purpose?I'm not sure how it's created. However, the function is to clean/clear your eyes while you sleep from contaminants and not needed materials. When you sleep your entire body is cleansing and healing itself. The same goes for your eyes. Any contaminant that the eyes deems as unnecessary is cleansed and removed. The eye discharges this material in the corners of your eyes (the idea being as long as it's outside the eye). When you sleep there are also "bedbugs" that feast on your skin flakes that fall off. It's a similar concept. Your body sheds it's unneeded and dead skin and your eyes do the same. Unneeded materials such as, eyelashes, if you own a pet the pet's fur that gets into your eyes, etc gets cleaned out to rid your body of these things to prevent possible infection or contamination of the eye. It's a very healthy and good thing. Without this measure, many people would suffer from multiple diseases and infections of their eyes. Your eyelashes only catch so much, but if you if have short eyelashes or things that get in your eyes that the lashes don't catch get cleansed out at this time. Just keep in mind that like everything else, when you sleep your body is cleansing, regenerating, fighting, whatever your body needs at this time. That's why when you're sick you're body also is extremely tired. It's your body's best time to heal itself is when you are asleep. It's the reason sleep is so integral to your routine and important to a healthly lifestyle.
