We recently noticed that in all of our 2 1/2 year old daughters' photos, her left eye always shows the "red eye" effect. It has also started "wandering" inward. A friend told us they heard about another child exhibiting this and they turned out to have Cancer in that eye. It had already progressed to the childs brain by the time it was diagnosed. Has anyone ever heard of this or know of possible causes. We do have a Doctor appointment next week, but in our rural area, I'm not confident about the knowledge base. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Kids do have wandering eyes, particularly inwardly, due to being long sighted. It is quite common, and may be correctable with glasses or possibly patching. The child should see an Ophthalmologist and an orthoptist, to assess the nature of the eye movement problem, and possible treatments.

  • My daughter had retinoblastoma. I discovered it because her eye had started to wander. In hindsight we went back and looked at old photos. The "red eye" was indeed much lighter in her bad eye. Hope your eye exam was better than ours. P.S. 2 1/2 yrs later she is doing great.
