  I am 21 years old...I have been diagnosed with Hypothyroid and am on Levothyroxine to treat it...i also have anxiety, high blood pressure and acid reflux all of which i am on medicine for; however i still have symtoms of hypothyroid and my blood pressure remains high. i have had an endoscopy and multiple ultra sounds yet nothing has been found. I keep gaining weight which is my biggest concern at this point i am tired of being asked when i am "Due" because i am not fat just swollen in my abdomen; Diet and excercise do nothing for me i still gain weight. My doctor has noticed this weight and has no suggestions or answers. I am open to any ideas and will try just about anything to get back to my normal size!!!!!!! and to be healthy again!!!!

  • Hi Shonna,First make sure your doctor has you on the correct medication amount.Check out this website:http://www.thyroidtoday.com/ExpertOpinions/LabMedicine.asp?page=2Your weight in kgs is multiplied by 1.6 to achieve the optimal therapeutic target level. For instance if your ideal body weight is 125 lbs, your dose would be 91 mcg of Synthroid (which there is no such dose so the closest one would be used). Now if you're considerably overweight, this dose might be increased to 100 mcg or more. The goal of a correct dose is a serum TSH level between 0.5 µIU/L and 2.0 µIU/L. This is based on the test range of 0.4 µIU/L to 4.12 µIU/L.My endo follows the protocol above and also medicates for symptoms. So I am on a higher dose than the suggested one because I am overweight as well. The other possibility is that you have one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism, sleep apnea. This can cause continued weight gain, hypertension, GERD, and many more symptoms.I too look about 6 months pregnant and my primary doctor thought I had something else wrong with me. However, my endo asked me one thing. Do you sleep with someone and do they say that you ... I didn't let him finish his sentence. I knew what he was going to ask. Do you snore? Yes, I do. And so he referred me to a pulmonologist for a sleep study to determine if I have sleep apnea. I've done some reading online and I have nearly every symptom of it.Do a search online under sleep apnea:symptoms and you just might find your answers.
