Weird throat and numbness symptoms, very worried

Hi all, I'm a 30-year old male who smokes, I have been having some very weird symptons recently that have greatly worried me. About two months ago one evening I got a moderate sore throat with a sore tongue (pain in the tongue was worse than in the throat) and also had some soreness at the back and roof of my mouth. This had vanished by the morning and I had no more symptoms for a further month. However just under a month ago I had a sore throat for three days again with a sore tongue, though the tongue was far less sore than the first time and unlike the throat, the sore tongue only lasted a day. A few days later I found that I had a weird numbness all down the left hand side of my face and throat, down the back of my head and neck, also with stiffness, occasionally aching and mild pain, this numbness then seemed to spread to my left leg for many hours on two occasions. There was no sore throat, and this whole thing lasted for about 36 hours. Went to the dentist who said there was nothing wrong with my mouth or tongue, went to the hospital and the doctor examined and looked down my throat and said that he could find nothing unusual, neither could he find anything wrong to explain the numbness. He told me not to worry and said the sore throats were probably the result of infections and that the numbness could have the same explantion or else it could be a minor circulation/heart problem.
However three days later I got another sore throat, this time with the numbness occuring at the same time (though not as severely and not this time in my leg), this time on the right hand side, same side as the sore throat. This only lasted a day or so. Have had no further numbness since but I am now having repeated reoccuring sore throats, which are sometimes accompanied by mild jaw and neck pain. The sore throat only goes away for a matter of days before returning. Now I have a sore throat for four days which has turned into a very severe sore throat. Occasionally I am still getting a sore tongue, though this is not as painful as on the first occasion two months back. I have smoked for around 13 years and am obviously very worried by this, obviously the worst has occured to me, but I'm not sure what to make of it. Am not convinced by the doctors explanation (to be fair, the sore throats were not as reoccuring when I saw him). Does anyone here have any idea what this might be? I am extremely concerned.
