I've had this problem for some years now, but it much more frequently now.
It starts with a slight itchy feeling in my throat; the kind that makes you go "ahem" as if to clear your throat. Then it gets progressively worse, like a dial being turned up, as the itching becomes gagging. Now here's the weird part: The gagging seems to occur on only one side of my throat at a time, and it makes the eye on the side in question cry while the other remains dry. The nostril on the same side gets stuffed up (as would happen when one cries), and I start salivating like crazy!!
The gagging makes me want to cough, but I try not to because I'm affraid I might vomit. So I just keep swallowing like crazy until the "episode" passes, which lasts about 1 minute.
I had spoken to my doc about this and she said it was probably because I have dry mouth due to an anti-depressant (effexor), but I know of other people who take this medication without this problem. I aslo have very bad acid reflux for which I take Pantoloc (don't know if it's relevant or not).
