throat problems

I was recently diagnosed with inactive mononucleosis, and I'm not sure when I got it. My tonsils have been swollen for at least 9 months, and I went to the ENT doctor about three months ago and he said there was nothing wrong. I've gotten at least 3 throat infections since the appointment. What could be the cause for these infections?
