Strep Throat or a Virus?

About 4 or 5 days ago I started getting a sore throat. I have no other major symptoms other then headache and stuffed up nose, but I'm worried because it hasn't gone away yet. I don't have a high fever, although my temperature is about 99.1 or so which is above normal. Most of the pain seems to be up high in my throat (I can't really describe it... it feels almost like it's the place where my nose drains into my pharynx, just behind my mouth) and just above my larynx. I've had a normal appetite and I've been attending school because even though I haven't been feeling great, I've felt well enough to function normally. Strep throat is going around, and I need an opinion as to whether this these symptoms match the symptoms of strep, or whether it's just a virus. And if it is a virus, is there anything I could do to make it go away faster/ get rid of the pain?

If it is strep then you will need antibiotics. However, a lot of folks like myself have been suffering with what you describe and it appears to be one tough bug, not strep but resistant to antibiotics. A lot of folks have had problems with the roof of the mouth (the palate) and in my case as well I developed a lump which is red in the top of the mouth. I have never had anything like this ever before. You should gargle with full strength listerine (the original full strength formula) and/or gargle with warm water with salt in it and possibly with crushed aspirin in the water. Don't put aspirin in the water everytime you gargle because you must take aspirin as well according to the instructions. These other times just use warm water and salt to gargle. Also disinfect your toothbrush before you brush your teeth etc because you may be reinfecting yourself. If it is strep, you will need a culture done for diagnosis. Good luck on this and I hope you feel better.
