We could really use some help from members who have had a similar experience. My wife went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Sinusitis just about two weeks ago. He prescribed Z pac and Dimatap along with some pills for the cough. The green mucus cleared up pretty quickly, but she has had an on going problem with the drainage and thick mucus which causes her to cough especially at night and difficulty clearing her trhoat at times because the mucus is so thick. These incidence have decreased over the last couple of weeks, but they haven't gone away and she needs some relieve so she can get some sleep and get this behind her. Any thoughts from anyone would be appreciated.

  • First of all, I too have had lots of problems with sinusitis, and treat it often in my acupuncture clinic. Here are some suggestions:1. If she is taking a decongestant/antihistamine, I would recommend stopping and instead take Mucinex, which will thin the nasal secretions. 2. Get a neti pot and have her learn to use it daily - this works WONDERS for sinusitis and allergies. You can find a neti pot at a health food store, or look for something called Dr. NeilMed's sinusRinse at your local pharmacy. Both are excellent, and take some getting used to. A neti pot will clear out the sinus passages so they can better do their job of filtering out toxins. 3. Stay away from ALL dairy products, especially cheese. These are very mucus producing. Also cut out sugars and processed foods as much as possible. 4. Consider trying acupuncture or NAET - both are brilliant for sinusitis. If she has chronic problems with this, then you should look into candida overload as it is often implicated in chronic sinusitis. Lastly, make sure she is taking a good quality PROBIOTIC to counterbalance the effects of the Z pac. Again, any good heathfood store will have this and it will help rebuild her intestinal flora, thus improving her immune system. Best wishesDOM

  • Dom; Thanks for your reply and believe me we will be working off the list you sent us. My wife is going back to the doctor today to see what he can give her for this thick mucus. It's annoying during the day with two or three bouts of heavy coughing, but when she wakes up in the middle of the night and can't breath right away until she clears that stuff out it is frightening. Thank you again for taking time to respond we appreciate your kindness. God bless; Bob

  • You are most welcome, and I hope your wife feels better soon! If she experiences any chest pain or tightness, and body weakness then I would suggest she get an xray to rule out pneumonia. Chinese medicine has some very good formulas to help clear up the mucus in the chest. Please look for an acupuncturist near you who is also NCCAOM certified in Chinese Herbal medicine. www.acufinder.com is a good resource - you can punch in your zip code and see if there is a qualitified practitioner near you. Best wishesDOM
