sinus headache & eye area pain

Hi, For 2 weeks I've had on and off headaches , pressue like but the thing that worries me is the one sided eye/side of nose/temple pangs of pain that have been going on continually. I saw my GP who said it could be sinuses , to try a decongestant . I am leery of taking this as it can raise blood pressure, cause palps, dizziness etc. She said if it doesn't go away I could see a neuro or an eye dr. So she wasn't very helpful. I didn't have any redness so she concluded I don't have an infection, is that the only criteria for a sinus infection?! Anyone had this before? I think I may need to see an ENT. Thanks

  • Sure sounds like sinusitis to me. You don't need to have redness to have a sinus infection. There are several things you can do to help you with this. Do you have nasal congestion? If so, then get a neti pot or Dr. NeilMed's sinus cleanse and use it daily. Alternating hot/cold packs on the affected area will help. If you can get essential oils of eucalyptus, clove, cinnamon, oregano and mix with olive oil - this makes a great topical treatment.Get some Mucinex, as this will thin your secretions and help. A decongestant could help, but stay away from antihistamines as these can make your symptoms worse. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is very helpful for sinusitis. • Thanks for answering. I am trying to make an appt with an ENT soon. I can't take the ear and eye pangs, 3 weeks is enough. I have been using moist heat rags over my sinus/eye and one of those personal steamers for a while now. I may try the mucinex, though the dr I saw said it won't help. I will try the eucalyptusThe side of my nose hurts a little since last night too. Like when you are going to get a pimple except I'm not. Not the sore from blowing kind. I just hope it doesn't take too long to get in to a real dr. The last one I saw was a waste of my time. So , you have heard of pains in the eye and ear with Sinus problems? I wonder if I should have been given an antibiotic. I am not very happy with drs. right now. M

  • Hi I saw the neuro who is sending me for a CT scan of the sinuses. I am just worried about aneurysms or tumors since I foolishly searched the internet. The moist heat and steaming isn't helping all that much and pain killers don't either. Any one else have any info or advice for me, etc? Thanks, M

  • I have been to see 2 ENTs as a matter of fact, just seen the second one today for c/o swelling under/behind my eyes and feels like it swells into my forehead and back into the back of my head and neck. I had 2 CT scans done and both of them are clear of any infection but he is going to give me a fungal medicine to rinse my sinus with in case its a fungal problem. I did have a sinus infection that was treated with 2 rounds of amoxicillin and one round of Ceftin, but I think I got infection because I was so swollen. I have never had sinus problems like this in my life. And this swelling does no feel like a sinus problem. I also have to go to occupational therapy for lymphatic therapy. (never heard of this but at this point ready to try anything) I had a brain MRI done that was normal and have seen 2 neurologist that say the swelling isnt related to anything neuro. So good luck to you and if you find anything out , please let me know. If the swelling doesnt go down with these next 2 things Im going to try (nasal spray, antihistamine spray did not work. ) Im going to keep going back to my doctor until they either figure out what is wrong, or give me some kind of relief.

But I have found out that this is typical. I sometimes think I know more than they do. For example, the GP should have sent me for a CT scan and I'd have it over with by now, instead of just showing me the door. I am actually seeing 3 different specialists to figure out what is going on and what do you bet it is all a guessing game. I don't have the swelling you are talking about. I have eye pangs, ear pangs and the daily headaches that feel like my head and sinus area is full and throbby. Good luck to you and I hope you find relief! Anyone else have these daily headaches, related to sinus, migraine, what? Thanks, M

  • Please do not listen to anything Shula or Acuann tell you. My sister just passed away because Shula and Acuann told her that her doctor was wrong and she did not have a serious condition. Acuann even told her to get acupuncture to get healed. These people are going to be investigated for practicing medicine without a license. Shula and Acuann are specifically wanted in connection with my sisters homocide. Thats right homocide. If she would have listened to her doctor instead of these internet quacks she would still be here today. Rest assured I will do everything in my power to put these two behind bars and shut this website down for good.

  • To unregistered 30678, Actually when this first started over 4 months ago, I did feel like my whole sinus cavity was swollen, had headaches , deep ear pain (still get that) eyes are tender. That went on for about 3 weeks, then a sinus infection showed up, took amoxicillin, didnt help, took another round, helped a little, was clearing up, infection came back, took 20 days of Ceftin, finished 3 weeks ago, most sympoms have cleared up exept swelling around my eyes, my left one most. Sinus totally clear. I did google "periorbital swelling" today to see if I could find anything, most It comes up with is thyroid, (my TSH is normal) and Periorbital cellulitis due sinus infection (which both CT scans say no infection present) Note, both CT scans done after antibiotic therapy. But I did find an interesting blog about where this one person was asking if anyone else had eye swelling after using Flonase and a few people wrote back and said they did. I have been on Nasacort for 4 months. I thought maybe thats what was causing eye swelling but when I tried to go off a few weeks ago, my eyes swelled up worse. Since then i have at least lowered my dose. I was taking it twice a day but now Im down to once a day. Maybe I wasnt weaning myself off of it long enough. Guess we will see. Dont know where to go from here. Still waiting for the drug company to send me the fungal nasal wash. Good luck to you, I hope one of your 3 specialist can help you.

  • Well, I think I may have figured something out . This whole thing started 4 months ago when I started decreasing my dose of HRT and started with swelling under and behind my eyes ,then swelling in my whole head, then progressed to a really bad sinus infection I have been trying to come off my HRT for the past 4 months and finally did it almost a month ago. Within the past few weeks I noticed that the swelling in my eyes was getting better I my sinus infection had cleared up when about a week before finishing the Ceftin. So I thought I would restart my HRT this weekend. WRONG. The swelling around my eyes was worse when I woke up yesterday and today, and also having some nasal congestion ( havent had this at all since clearing up the sinus infection) and swelling in my head. Needless to say, I just ripped the patch off. So, either it was just a fluke that this happened this weekend, or I just cant tolerate HRT. I will stay off HRT for a while longer and see if it gets better again. I think the ENTs are right, I dont think this is a sinus problem.

    8 Surprising Facts About Cholesterol

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • I also have had horrible headaches, earaches, neck and shoulder pain, sinus infection symptoms. My GP has treated me with 4 different antibiotics over a 6 month period for ear infections and nasal infection, wheezing. Nothing has cleared up, so I went to ENT, he said TMJ causes all of these symptoms, minus the chest wheezing. So I was actually releived after months of useless antibiotics, and their side effects I finally knew what was wrong and was going to get a nightguard, some ultrasound and be cured. WRONG!! Wasn't TMJ after seeing my dentist, a Orthodontist, and my oral surgeon..wearing a huge nightguard for 3 months around the clock. I have seen a neurologist, had CT scans, MRI's of my head, neck and spine. All clear. Been to a chiropractor and now in physical therapy for head and neck pains. Nothing is helping, I have 4 kids 14,6,3,and 9 months..I can't afford to feel this way all day every day. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

  • Chronic sinusitis is just a bear, and very hard to get rid of. One thing I suggest is to look into food intolerances (not allergies) as this can contribute. Try cutting out dairy, wheat, sugar and see if your symptoms improve. Also, candida fungus is often a factor in chronic sinusitis. There was a study that found fungus in 80% of nasal secretions of sinusitis patients. Google candida or visit www.wholeapproach.com for info on candida. Lastly, you might want to look into something called NAET. I am going to start this treatment and am very excited about it. It is Natural Allergy Elimination Technique, www.naet.com. Best wishesDOM

I have tension type headache or pain in nose/eye /temple area. I am seeing the neuro soon but I don't think he is a headache specialist and I have no faith.

  • I have some similar symptoms. About two hours after I wake, whenever that is, I start to notice my sinus on my right side isn't clear. There is nothing blocking it, nothing to blow out, or pull in. My mucus is slimy, thin, and clear. I cough up mucus that is like little jelly balls. They are solid enough to bite betwixt my front teeth and have no odor. As soon as I begin to be bothered by what I initially percieved as sinus pressure I get a great deal of pressure behind my right eye, then my ear feels like it is not open or something and it hurts tho noise doesn't make it worse, my temple on my right is throbbing, my jaw is stiff and the pain makes me visualize ripping out my back teeth to relive the pain, the back of my neck at the base of my skull hurts as well and all of these very distinct individual pains are accompanied with the sensation that an intake of air is filling my skull and not my lungs. Every little gasp is excruciating and just feels as if my skull will split open right in the middle of my head. It's such intense pain that results from breathing that I cannot will myself to breathe much less relax and let it happen. I have to have someone telling me to breathe every few seconds, becuz I just am not and cannot willingly put myself thru that pain. These headches can last as long as 8 hours and are usually 6 hours long. Two tablets of oxycodone are all that help and are what's keeping me suffocating on the pain. I'm never nauseous with the headache, but I do get vertigo, visual, auditory, disturbances, and finally become unable to feel my body at all. I know I should worry, but how much and who should I see about this if I don't have a regular doctor? Are you experiencing any other things similar to what I listed?

I started with the pain behind the eye over a month ago and I just want to know what this is, doesn't seem to be sinus though I am now going to see a sinus specialist, an ENT wasn't enough apparently and the Neuro. I have little faith but we'll see.

  • I had the left, just above the eye daily deep throbbing headache for several weeks. At first blamed sinus infection but never had any sign of a sinus problem. Finally go the dx of migraine and was put on topamax and have not had another one since. I should have thought of those right away since have had a hx of ocular migraines then long time ago had the awful, regular migraines.Hope by now you are clearing yours up.

  • Lets see, I have been to Washington University to see a professer of ENT and he looks at both my CT scans and says they are totally fine and that I have absolutly no disease in my sinus cavity. Didnt even look up my nose or anything. He said I dont have a fungus because it would show up on the X Rays. He said not to use the Sporanax nose spray because it is not needed. I tried to tell him about all my antibiotic use but he didnt want to listen. Then I went to my dentist and got full x rays of my teeth and they are fine. I am supposed to see an oral surgeon this wed but I know it is not the problem. IVe had a full thyroid panel, ANA and Sed rate, all fine) I know I must have yeast somewhere because Im getting that thrush feeling back in my mouth again, this went away and a lot of the facial swelling went away when I took some Diflucan last month. I was feeling pretty good for a few weeks after taking that. Plus I tracked back all of my symptoms since I was in the hospital in Aug. And the only time I didnt have severe facial swelling was when I took Diflucan in Sept, when I was on the 5 rounds of steroids, and when I took Diflucan a few weeks ago. HMMMM. I also am scheduled to see an allergest in 1 week. I am going to talk to my doctor today about my findings, and get another prescription for Diflucan. If my swelling goes down again, then I think I may have an answer. If it doesnt, At least I can rule it out.

  • To the person with intermittant eye pain, I have a long hx of migraines , years ago when they first started they were on the side of my head, they went away for about 10 years from age 20-30 then when they started up again, they were always behind by right eye. Now since my Hyst, I dont get many headaches but when I do, they are in different places and not as intense. I go to a headache clinic. If your headaches continue, it probably would be a good idea to get someone that will work with you. I have been seeing my headache doctor for almost 10 years now and even though we could never figure out why ,(although now its obvious that hormones played a big role)he was able to help me develop a plan that would keep me as functional and pain free as possible.

Please research candida and alternatives to diflucan. With that amount of steroid use, antifungals, and antibiotics your immune system is completely shot! If you continue on this path I wouldn't be surprised if you started having autoimmune symptoms, if you haven't already. There are many paths to healing. Please consider a candida cleanse at the very least - Threelac is one of the best ones out there. Visit www.candidasupport.org for info. Look into NAET therapy to help with your chronic sinus/allergies. It is just brilliant and can get you on the path to wellness. NAET will find an allergic response that is completely missed by allergists, and treats this in a noninvasive way. www.naet.com for more info. Best wishesDOM
