Recurring Sore Throat. HELP.

Someone please help me.

I'll tell you a little about myself. I am 28/M and generally healthy. I receive a flu shot every year. I work at a dealership detailing cars. I wear masks, and gloves to protect myself.

Recently, since early Jan., I've been getting SEVERE sore throats. The first time, I thought it was just a normal cold. The sore throat came on sudden, then my body felt really sore (muscle aches - like a flu) and my breathing felt laboured. It seems to go from a sore throat to chest congestion. Lasted 4 days.

Four weeks later, the EXACT same symptoms happened. This time, it came on worse. Identical symptoms, but worse. My body was chilly and extremely achey. It also felt like my throat was closing up. It was EXTREMELY hard to swallow. Also felt like a burning sensation back of the throat. I went to a walk in clinic to rule out strep (culture test). She put me on erythromycin for 5 days "just in case" (even though I hate taking antibiotics if they're unsure if its viral, bacterial, or fungal). That lasted only 4 days as well.

This time, three 1/2 weeks later, AGAIN!!! I am missing so much work because of this. What seems to start as a harmless little sore throat turns into WWIII for my body. No point listing symptoms because they are exact same as above. This is day three, and I'm getting better, but the cough has been left behind leaving me sleepless. Sore throat is still present, but not as bad. 4 days now.

What can this be? I have an appointment with my family doctor Monday, but I'm sure I'll be better by then. Three times in three months. Recurring sore throats and chest congestion & flu-like symptoms everytime.

  • :) If you wear mask and gloves while detailing cars, that helps but not enough! Any bare skin---like arms, feet, face, ears ETC Those parts can absorb the chemicals that you are cleaning with! Even when covered, after removing the mask---you are breathing the chemicals that are on your clothes and hair. I believe that you have Multi-chemical Sensitivities. or MCS.:( Google MCS and read about it. I have the very same thing and that's what mine is.Shirley

  • The 2nd time I went for a culture throat test (almost a month ago now) they said, "we'll put you on antibiotics, however, if you DON'T hear from us for the results, AND you feel better, stop taking the antibiotics."Stupid thing is, the test came back positive for GROUP A STREPTOCOCCUS!!! They never f**** called me or nothing. The third time, I went to my doctor (after I posted initially here) and the test results again came back today positive for group A. I am being treated with Pen V K 300mg for 10 days. This better clear, or I will consider legal action against that clinic.

  • If you get it again, you need to consider having your tonsils removed, becasue they might actually be damaged, and if strep is left for that long, you can get severe kidney disease or failure. Just to be sure, I'd get my urine checked to make sure you have no hematuria. Multiple streps and infections have been linked to a disease called IgAN

  • Strep throat requires antibiotics. However, three strep infections in three months sounds too frequently, and frequent antibiotic therapy may have some negative effects. Ask you doctor about preventative measures.

  • Hello all, I've had the same issue all your guys are talking about. My sore throat started out feeling like a small cold. The pain though, stayed for almost three months. The soreness would located on the left side, and hurt intermittently when I would swallow. Some days the pain would be worse. I thought I had a lymph node swollen. The only time the pain was constant would be during yawning--There would be a dull ache running up the lower-left jaw line. I went to three different doctors. I was placed on Zithromycian, Leva-pak, FimVir, and Allegra. The doctor's thought it was either Strep, HSV-1, or Post-Nasal Drip. Nothing seemed to work. I started talking the matter into my own hands by researching the anatomy of the neck, and saliva glands. I found an interesting website devoted to teaching doctors how to examine the head-and-neck. There was a method to feel if the Submaxillary gland was swollen. I tried the exam on myself, and could feel my left submaxillary glad was slightly swollen/hard. I palpated the glad several times in an attempt to discover if there were any tumors, cysts, or other blockage. It has now been 24-hours since I did this. The swelling and pain have almost diminished. I don't really know what worked. But maybe a saliva gland on the left side was block, and by smoothly, and carefully pushing on this glad caused the blockage to break free. Thus allowing the gland to work/flow properly. I have attached a link to the website. The figure I referenced is Figure 119.7 (palpation of the submaxillary glands)http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bookshelf/br.fcgi?book=cm&part=A3627Please let me know if this work for any of you.
