PLEASE HELP! ... Constant Throat Clearing and Cough

I live in the SF bay area, non-smoker and for about 11 months now I've been plagued with a chronic, constant throat clearing which usually in the morning expresses as a non-productive, whooping type of cough. It started when I came down with a cold or flu type illness in Nov. 2006 which passed like any other typical cold/flu, but left me with this throat thing. It's absolutely maddening! And no one seems to know what's going on or what to do to cure these symptoms.

It starts as soon as I wake up, that feeling of something in the back of my throat that causes me to start the "aheming" which goes on all day long. For a while my ribs were hurting because of it. I think at this point my body has adapted so that I don't hurt from it or lose sleep, but it's still just absolutely crazy making! It's as if there's something in my throat that I can neither cough up or swallow down, triggering both a very hard, constant swallowing and throat clearing. The symptoms remain constant no matter where I go in or out of town.

I drink plenty of water, daily, take a high quality multi vitamin, eat well, get plenty of rest and exercise and I'm not stressed out... other than when I think about this incessant throat thing, that is! I'm not on any medications other than the ones I've tried attempting to treat this, whatever it is. I've had a chest x-ray, sinus scope, endoscopy, an allergy test. All my vital signs are normal, healthy, no signs of infection. I've seen the Allergist, Internist, ENT, and Gastrointeroligist. Each one sees possible signs of causes related to they're own specialties and thus I've been put on Rx (Protonix, Asiphex, Prilosec) for reflux, Mucinex and (Claritin-d, Allegra, Flonase, Astalin and local bee honey), for allergies. Yet I don't experience allergies nor heartburn-reflux type symptoms and for several months now I've been popping pills and sniffing nasal sprays all to no avail.

My doctors seemed stumped. Medications are not working. This throat thing is driving me crazy and I don't know what to do next! Can anyone out there help me?

  • There is one thing you might try. An allergist can put you through a series of tests. They inject things that cause allergies in tiny pin *****s and see how your skin reacts. There may be a single thing or several things combined that may cause this. It sounds like an allergic reaction to something in your house. Have you had your house tested for black mold? This is indeed a strange thing that is happening to you, especially if you have been to so many doctors. I'm surprised that they can't find the cause. Look up things on the internet...you may find something that no one else has thought of. You may have a chronic sinus drip. Have your had this checked? Hope this helps.;)

  • Hi,I saw the allergist and did that pin cushion test. He's the one who prescribed the Astalin and decongestants. No help. I don't think it's anything from my house since whether I'm in or out of the house, or in or out of town, the symptoms remain constant. The ENT checked my sinuses, nothing wrong, no drip or infection... Bizzare, I know!

  • I had the same type of symptoms and a camera was inserted down my throat to find the problem. I was always clearing my throat. I had Acid Reflux. The doctor had me change my diet. No chocolate, red sauce, tea, coffee, etc. Nothing with acid. After two months I saw a significant improvement. You mentioned you visited the ENT. Did he use a camera? Just a thought.

  • Yes, I did have an endoscopy to check for GERD. The results were inconclusive, so they put me on several different proton inhibitors just to be sure. They didn't help. I also tried a wheat and dairy free diet for 2 weeks and that didn't help. I'm seeing a homeopath now too.... And so far still no change! Very frustrating...Jon

  • I have the same thing. I've had a chronic sinus drip since I was 14, and I'm now 45. My 3 siblings also developed it as teens, and we all just figured we inherited it from our dad, who also has had it forever. Mayo Clinic is conducting studies since 2001 to come up with something conclusive, and they believe it's caused by a fungus. I read on the internet the other day that it can be caused by an overgrowth of yeast. So I'm going to try cutting out foods that contain yeast (breads, beer, wine, etc), and sugars and see how that goes. Also, read this post on Yahoo: http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index.php?qid=20070326035516AAjH3VT - I'm going out this afternoon to find these item and give them a try. 31 years is long enough to deal with the constant drip at the back of the throat, the throat clearing, the bad breath that results, etc...

  • Wow, I thought ONE year was bad. Not sure if what I've got is sinus drip. I had an ENT do a sinoscope and he didn't say there was any kind of a problem. Well hmmm, grapefruit seed extract? I've had Oregano oil before, but not since this throat thing started a year ago. Any shamans or witch doctors out there, I'm willing to try anything at this point!

  • Its probably due to all the planes flying ionized salt over the bay to bring in the clouds for inland farming. You are breathing that crap in too.

  • I had exactly the same thing for two years, and I finally found the cure: Pure Wild Oregano Oil. You can get it at most health food and vitamin stores. Just place two drops under your tongue and hold it there for a minute before swallowing. Do this as soon as you wake up, at noon and again just before you go to bed. For me the condition cleared up in just a couple of days.Just so you know I'm not a doctor, and I have no idea why the stuff worked for me, but it certainly did the trick and gave me my life back.Hope it works for you. Good luck.

  • Please tell me that you have gone to a doctor to have this checked. I know it would be nice it it was simply something that you could relieve with oregano oil... but if it something that demands quick action, leaving it could cost you your life. Please go see your family doctor or an ENT.

  • Do you take an ACE inhibitor? You can have your bradykinin levels tested. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/484537_2Have you had an mri or ct of your thorax? Cranial nerve ten is responsible for the cough reflex. Make sure you have nothing irritating CN X. I assume your ENT has ruled out allergies, infections, asthma... etc.

  • all four very sensitive parts of our body and work differently that's why symptoms are different.for e.g. a patient with hearing loss should be referred for evaluation or treated depending on the cause. Avoid ototoxic medications.

I have tried one presciption after another for sinus stuff and acid reflux. I have had a barrium swallow done. Negative!I just had a EGD done (scope down the throat, larynyx, stomach and intestine; again Normal.................................... There is nothing normal about this!I have been to National Jewish Medical Center in Denver; and again Nothing!!!Is there some one out there; perhaps a doctor who would consider doing a study or research??? • Hello, I just got back from buying the oregano oil..................I pray it works. How long did u have to take it for? Tastes Really BAD!Mary Ellen in Colo SpringsI have the same thing. Non smoker, checked for allergies, got sick when in for a day surgery and came out with a cold. Ever since I have had a wet cough that never goes away. And I can't swallow it so it is ruining my life as well. Had a sinus surgery for blocked sinuses, and thought that would clear it up. Taking PPI inhibitor to see if that works. If I was going to die from it for sure I would be dead by now, been almost two years, so don't think fatal. I would love to ditch this cough/throat clearing. With mine I really have a wheeze when I lye down and tryed proping my head when I learned about GERD. Checked for athsma, not that. I too wonder if Candida is the problem. My tongue is coated, so I've tryed the oregano and grapeseed extract. But if this PPI doesn't work, I've heard you can get rid of Candida with Diflocan of course see your doctor as I read it can be ******n your liver. Sorry if my spelling is not great here.Just went to Vegas and I swear, not one person was coughing! Did notice when entering Seattle that people were more so, so I wonder if the wet weather is also a culprit. This is so disabling, limits you to work you apply for (no restaurants) had to take a closer vacation as I was afraid people would thing they would catch something, not to mention, my husband has had to listen to this for far too long. Don't forget about us if you find a cure, share your info. I am also looking at another reflux that is in the Larynx. Spelling probably wrong on that. I googled constant throat clearing and found that.
