Food Stuck in Throat... Do i have tonsil stones or not?

I started to have these things last year. I'm a 22 year old male and this is the most frustrating thing in the world. Once i had these things stuck in my throat for 12 days and i couldn't stop thinking of anything but this.

I did not know what this what. I always felt it was food stuck in my throat. Whenever this happened, it WAS ALWAYS food i ate but i either didn't chew it properly or ate it too fast. I keep telling myself i will chew properly and eat slow but sometimes i don't.

I found out last year this was tonsil stones when checking out yahoo answers and google. Its a white thing less than the size of a pea that SMELLS. So yes it was indeed tonsil stones. I had this about 12 times the last year. Everytime i swallow my saliva or eat something, I feel something stuck in my throat.

Everytime i got the tonsil stones out, I had to intentionally throw up and gargle myself in the neck to make these things cough out. I had success every time but it takes a lot of attempts to do it. Again i have it b/c i ate a hot dog too fast or didnt chew it properly. The last 2 days has been frustrating for me b/c the food is stuck in my throat and i cannot cough these tonsil stones out.

One time i went to the doctor and he gave me some pills to take to help it. The following day or 2 i finally coughed it out but it had nothign to do with the pills. Out of the 12 time i had tonsil stones, i coughed it out every single ***n time. I wished i could just swallow it and it goes down my throat but it has never happened once.

I have ate big pieces of bread and drank water/salt to cough it out but it still doesn't work. Does anyone know if a doctor can just go into your throat and take it out? Trying to gag myself in the neck to make it throw up is very hard for me now. My face turns red and well you get the picture.

Does anyone know what i can do? I really don't think i can cough this one out this time.

OKAY UPDATE I WENT TO THE DOCTOR today. Today was Monday and the food got stuck in my throat on Tuesday night so i had enough of it.

I told him about it and i said it was Tonsil stones. He told me it wasn't b/c it was stuck in my throat and NOT in my tonsils. He then referred me to a ENT specialist. He used a flashlight and the popsicle thing into my throat and said it isnt tonsil stones b/c he didnt see anything.

When i went to see the ENT specialist, they used the microscope and put it down my nose and into my throat. They tell me they see nothing when in fact that caused me to gag a bit and feel the food stuck even more.

Doe anyone know whats going on here? I mean the reason I am mad is b/c this stuff is stuck in my throat and i feel it every second. When i actually gargled it out the previous 10 times in the last year ... it looked exactly like a tonsil stone and smelled horrible. Normally it took me about 4-5 days to intentionally throw up and it would come out but now it wouldnt.

They set an appointment for me next Tuesday at another hospital to take Xrays. Some person on yahoo answers tells me i should see a gastro .... doctor as well and that person said she know of people with this problem. I am 100 percent positive this happened b/c of food b/c each time it happened, it was right after i ate too fast/ or chewed it not fully. Also, everytime i do cough it out, its small and white and SMELLS HORRIBLE:mad:

I have to go next Tuesday but can someone give me some advice on what to do now b4 next week? I tried throwing up the last 4 days with little help. Actually i gargled with vinegar and a small tonsil stone came out... pretty sure it is b/c it smelled like the other ones i have. Yet, i still feel food stuck in my throat.

Anyone can help please? Thank you.

  • I have the exact same thing. A few weeks ago I was eating a stir fry and got some snow pea stuck in my throat (or that's what I think happened anyhow) and now I have a tonsil stone, which I can see when I stick out my tongue and look in the mirror.I've read online that you can get rid of them with Q-tips and such, but this idea makes me feel a bit queasy, although I really want to get rid of it.Will it come back again? Does anyone know if tonsil stones can be a one-off thing or if they will now be a problem for me for the rest of my life like everyone seems to be saying online? Also, in that e-book I heard that it tells you the secret is to cut out all dairy/milk products from your diet - but I'm not sure how accurate or true this information is or if it is indeed a scam. I guess anything is worth trying when you're suffering from these buggers.

  • My bad news, they don't seem to go away, I've been aware of them for about a year, but for a long iem before that I'd occasionally cough up the horrible white things.Frankly, I check for them a few tiems a week, and am pretty rough with my tonsils - I do notice there's a bit of improvement in breath, but not as much as I'd like, and they keep coming back.So far, I've found nothing works except dragging them out.

(I'm 20 and this started when I was 18.) I think what happens is that when you eat things like chips and other foods that are hard, you get cuts or holes in your tonsils that heal but still leave little caverns where food, saliva and bacteria gather. Over time it hardens and causes that nasty smell. I've found that I get them less when I cut out chips and other really hard foods from my diet and when I am careful to chew my food better. Also, gargling with mouthwash and getting an extra soft toothbrush to get them out of your tonsils helps. Just make sure to keep your toothbrush clean and change it out frequently. If I can't replace my toothbrush every two-three months, I make sure to soak it in 91% rubbing alcohol for a little while to sanitize it. I do this every time I use it to get out the tonsil "stones"... I hope this helps. So far, it's helped me. I've also noticed that drinking hot tea sometimes dislodges it. (Without sugar or honey...those things just feed the bacteria further.)

Well let me not say that. It could be GERD/acid reflux which gives you Globus the feeling of something stuck in your throat. I have both so My poor throat switches between the two. I didnt believe i had tonsil stones because I never physically saw them until 2 weeks ago. I went for a barium swallow to test for GERD and I have that too. Anyway my ENT said antibiotics can treat the stones but only temporarily. They do come back. So I am getting my tonsils removed. I figure I would rather have them removed then have to deal with disgusting stones or take antibiotics forever.

  • Ok so I have had a long ordeal with these tonsil stones. they are like little monsters living in my tonsils. I am a 15 year old female and I have had the symptoms of tonsil stones for many years without knowing it. these symptoms include:-bad breath-white lumps in the back of throat-feeling of food being stuck in throatI have learned that tonsils have *CRYPTS* these are holes that are naturally there. some unlucky people's tonsils are like swiss cheese and these crypts are large and open. What happens is food, mucus, dead skin cells and all that nice stuff gets trapped in those crypts and it builds up and forms tonsil stones. these stones smell like death and taste terrible. SOME BAD NEWS: they WILL NOT go away. Some people have methods of removing them like using q-tips, water pics, gargling, or even their fingers. For me, that did not work. Any time i tried this, I would gag. I did not want to have to deal with this for the rest of my life. SO I went to the ENT. He said yes you have tonsil stones. He suggested all of those methods and I said I had done all of them and none worked. The next step was a tonsillectomy. I had my tonsils removed last wednesday and already my breath smells better, there is no bad taste in my mouth. I went 3 days after the surgery without brushing my teeth and my breath still smelled fine. I am still in recovery so I can't tell you exactly how things went. **IF YOU DO GET THE SURGERY I RECOMMEND:-eat a lot of food in the weeks before the surgery so far i have lost 7 poundsI hope this helps someone :)

  • Oh lord this sucks. I feel for all of you. I too am a sufferer. Now its not my tonsils so much as the cavety above that leads behind the ear. Especially the left side. I have probed endlessly and done damage to this area so, be careful because I have made it much worse. Every day I get food stuck, my tonsil swells, and by the next morning its okay until I eat again. I've been to an ENT twice and he says, "Its not food you are feeling it's dead skin cells and your alergies." BS Doc. I know its food. Every time I eat this happens. Certain foods are much worse: -Potato Chips/Corn Chips-Nature Valley Granola Bars-Hamburger-Rice...These top the list. One thing I have noticed is alcohol makes the tonsils a lot more sticky to foods. Perhaps the dehydration. I'll try the milk concept because I'll do anything. Gargling does help sometimes. I personally think the bacteria is a good thing because it eats the food that is there.I'm just going to pray because I have done everything I can do.

    8 Surprising Facts About Cholesterol

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • I feel for all of you. Im 26 and have had the same problem for 7 years. i'm trying to think if something happened to me that made this happen. I got my wisdom teeth removed around that time. I started drinking coffee... Hmmm. What else? The stuff in the tonsils is nothing compared to what's happening to me now. There is that flap of skin, sort of in front of the tonsils and between it and your tonsils is a cavety on both sides that goes behing the ear. My left side gets food stuck in it all the time, and the ENT keeps telling me its skin cells. It's food Doc. I wake up okay and then when I eat, food gets stuck in it and my tonsil and glands in my neck swell up. Its a nightmare and makes it very difficult to think about anything else. It has become much worse because I would pick at it all the time so, be careful. He's telling me it's alergies etc. It's not. I get food out of it all the time.Things I've learned. -The biggest rule. Swallow ConsciouslyYou can chew big bites but swawllow small amounts. If you try to swallow too much at a time it will force the food in there.-Alcohol makes your tonsils sticky. Don't drink much. If you do, Drink tons of water. -Stay hydrated. - Q tips & Water picks are awesome but, dangerous. You can do serious damage if you are not careful. Be gentle. If you see blood, do not touch your tonsils again for 3 days.-Gargle everydayThese foods top the list as far as trouble for your tonsils etc.-Granola bars-Potato Chips-Hamburger-RiceI'll avoid milk and dailry see how that works.

  • I have this too, reapeatedly, on one side of my throat, behind one tonsil. It is food of all kinds that gets trapped and basically just rots to no end, causing the smell. My doctor told me to use a water pic but it has to be an electric water pic to do any good. Cost about $40 at a pharmacy but a worthy bye as you can use on teeth as well. You can alter the force of the water stream...just stick it behind there and blast away. It is a truly miserable process and if set too hard, the water stream will make you bleed so start light and work your way up till it works. Sucks, I know!!!

  • I have had this problem for about six years now. I am 22. After probing with my finger and flicking with my tonsil with the end of a toothbrush, I found the best, easiest, and cheapest way to rid the tonsil of the irritation is by using a crochet needle, a mirror, and a flashlight. I shine the light into the bathroom mirror and position the reflection to aim directly at my tonsil (It is usually my left tonsil that gets clogged the most) to avoid poking other parts of my mouth. Then with the crochet needle, I poke and probe with the dull end of the needle where I can usually see the tonsil stone sticking out of the crevasse. The stone will dislodge itself after a few minutes. I usually get a little bleeding afterward, but only for a few seconds. Then I brush my teeth and enjoy fresh breath again. I find I usually get the stones after eating quickly or eating ground beef. I buy the crochet needles at Walmart. They are less than $1.50 for a small diameter one. They look like this if you haven't seen one before: http://www.purplelindacrafts.co.uk/ekmps/shops/purplelinda/resources/image/P1100777.JPGHope this helps.

  • Hi, I used Therabreath to get rid of my tonsil stones and while it is pretty expensive, it really does work. The thought of using a crochet needle on my throat or a toothbrush just doesnt work for me. I will say that I find myself needing to repeat the process every 5 or 6 months but I can live with that.
