Burning painful ear

 For quite afew years now, off & on my left ear will start burning inside & out & on the bone that right behind the ear. This just happens out of the blue, but I've also noticed it happens alot after I take a bath or shower. It will burn & hurt so badly that I can't hardly touch it or sleep on that side untill it goes away. Nor can I talk on the phone when it's doing this. I've told many doctors about it when I'd be visiting them for something else, & none of them seemed to have a clue what causes this. Course they never offered to check it our for me either. It doesn't hurt to far into the canal, & my whole external ear does this. Theses no discharge or anything other symptoms when this happens. But man does it burn & hurt to the point you can't touch it at all. Does anyone know what could be causing this? It started up again yesterday & has lightened up some, but still burning & hurting. It usually doesn't last this long.
Hoping someone can help me out here!

  • Sounds like shingles under the surface. Do you have any rash any where else.

  • No I have no rash or anything like shingles. But I only went to bed 2 hours ago. Couldn't sleep on that side, & awhile ago it woke me up hurting so bad. At first when I tried ti get up it felt like it was going to pull my eardrum out. Finally I made it out of bed, came downstairs & held a heatpack close to it for about 10 minutes. Took some Advil. I can touch it now but now I'm scared to lay back down as it might do the same thing after I wake up again...:( Sounds like shingles under the surface. Do you have any rash any where else.

  • Hi,It's been so long since I posted this, I was surprised to get another reply..LOL. Anyway I haven't been to the doctor with it as I had Sciatica for several months & finally had to have back surgery for it. But I do still get it. It usually just happens out of the blue with no warning. And I've noticed it happens when I'm out in the cold to much or even the heat & most times when I get water in my ear. And since it's not a continous pain, I don't think much about it when it's not burning. I may have it checked out one of these days after we get thru paying for our parts that insurance doesn't cover on all these hospital bills from the back surgery. Please let me know how your sons MRI goes! And if you find out whats causing it, I'd like to know that too. Hope they find out something as it seems his is constant & thats got to be very painful. I wish him all the best.Pamela

  • I have burning, tingling and numbness on outer ear into the ear canal and radiating above the ear on head. Have had this issue for at least a year. I notice it during or after using a cell phone and its becoming more pronounced. I use a low sar phone, too. The Samsung note 2. How safe are they, really?

  • Did you ever learn what causes this? Please let me know anything, I appreciate it. I've been going through this for a few months. My primary isn’t interested in helping to find the cause and hasn’t' advised anything to help. So I've made an appointment with the ENT and the neurologist but have to wait a few weeks for both appointments.
