Hello, I am new to this forum, and I need some advise. I am very scared!
I am a 21 year old female. On 10/19/06 at night I discovered a bump behind my ear. Now I know that I got it on that same day because my ear had been itchy for a couple of days already, inicially I thought it was just an insect bight or something similar because it was red and itchy, but my insect bites never last more than a few days and well my ear has been itchy for about 1 week and 1/2. Now like I said because my ear has been itchy on the 19th I noticed a bump behind my right ear, which hurts when I touch it. Its not very big, but I have never had anything like this happen to me before.
well I have had the bump for about 1 week now, its not increasing in size but its not going away. Its not as painful, but stil hurts when I touch it. Now about two days ago my ear started hurting a little but. Its a very slight pain wich comes and goes, sort of light waves of pain shoot from my ear to the righ side of my head. Sort of like a migran, but like I said its waves of slight pain wich start sort of at my ear, then moves to my right side of head and ends up behind my right side of my head. front to back.
I also have irritation on my neck, its very itchy, especially my left side, just as itchy as my ear, which is irritated because i have scratched it so much. Can anyone help me or give me advise!

Thanks, LaGuera77

  • I have a bump behind my left ear. I think mine is a pimple, though I've never had a pimple anywhere except my cheeks, and I haven't had a pimple since I was in high school. I think that if your bump is growing and now giving you pain equivalent to a migraine, you should go to the doctor and have it looked at. I don't know if scary stories can have truth in them, but possible bug bite + itching + lasts for a long time + shooting pain seems like it would equal spider babies...At any rate try rubbing alcohol. But please go to the doctor...

  • I've got bumps behind both ears and the doctor says they are mastoids and nothing to worry about, though they can itch and hurt usually if I get an ear/sinus infection.

  • Because of the location of the lump you should get it checked out. The lymph nodes run down from that area, and a doctor would def feel it. It is never out of line for you to seek medical advice. Each of us is different, and a swelling of any kind should be checked. Just go to your family doctor and they can take it from there.

  • I get bumps there all the time also. They get very itchy and I get pain in my ear and headaches. Mostly I get them due to stress. But you could very well have an infection and the very best thing would see a doctor about it. Especially if it has yet to go away.

  • lymph nodes are in lots of places including behind the ears. They swell and become painful when they are trying to fight off an infection. Infection on the head/face = lymph nodes on head pop out. They can stay out for 2 wks.You prob need some antibiotics for an infection of the sinus, ear, tooth, infected hair, etc... It could be anything! itching is another form of pain. Not unusual.

  • I get these once in a while since I was 14 years old. I remember having three at one time and they were huge. I went to see my doctor and yes, they were lymph nodes. They show up there because they are fighting off infections or just like the other ones in your body by your neck, under arm and bottom down where you'll find more when you are sick swell up. I usually get the ones behind by ear and bottom of my neck hair line when I have a sinus infection or allergies going on. If it really bothers you, the doctors can prescribe you antibotics to help you fight other infections going on in your immune system to help your lymph nodes. But if they don't go away w/in a month and continously are there you may want to have your doctor recheck you for other diseases such as cancer etc.

  • I've had this before and went to the doctor. I had fluid backed up in the Eustation(spelling) tube. It happened after an infection in my ear. I had my ear drained. then it went away. If it didn't I was told I would need surgery. See a doc, it could be bad.

  • I'm 14 and I have an infection kind of thing on my face which came up the other day - But I have absolutely no idea what it is.Two lumps came up around the time that I got the infection. One if on the left side of my neck, one is just behind my left ear, and my infection thingy is on my left cheek.Apparently, I had a similar infection when I was younger, and it lasted for months. If these lumps are connected, will they be there for months as well?O_O

  • I have a bump behind my right ear that is hard and about pea sized. Usually it doesn't bother me, but sometimes when my body is initially fighting something, it aches a little. It first appeared when I had mono when I was 20. I have to tell you, I was pretty freaked out and went to multiple doctors who told me several different reasons, until I insisted on a mono test. I guess they were hesitant at first because I didn't have any classic mono symptoms, but I knew those lymph nodes shouldn't be swelling. Anyway, it's still with me to this day, giving me a little annoyance from time to time but nothing major. I would check it out with a doctor, but don't fret about it. Heck, if I hadn't insisted on the mono test I may have had it come and go without ever knowing why I have that darn bump behind the ear.

  • Hey! Yes, these are definatly lymph nodes. I have had swollen nodes behind both ears since the beginning of Dec.06. I started to get VERY worried about them, as they were not going down. To my knowledge, I had not been sick or had any infections. I do have some allergies and have a baby last summer who i am nursing, therefore very tired. (I'm 29.) So, after reasearching it a lot on my own, I went to 4 different doctors, and finally found an ENT that said we should biopsy the nodes on 2/6/78. After all of the Googleing I had done on the internet, I was convinced that I had lymphoma. But, to my surprise, the results came back normal. This means that there was no cancer or infection in the nodes. So at this point, I ask myself and then my DR., "what is normal about having 1 cm knots sticking out from behind my ears!!" They assured me and then reassured me that they are "reative lymph nodes". This means that your nodes can swelll up for many reasons that are of no real concern, from allergies to illness to a scratch. They said that it can take many months for them to return to normal size, and sometimes they never do. I still have one node that is 4 mm. (I just went to the dr today for an update.)I am glad that I stayed on the Drs. until I got the biopsy, because, very rarely, this can be a sigh of cacner. (my dr said VERY rarely in this area behind ears). So get these things checked out for peace of mind, but try not to worry too much. Again, my ENT says he see this all of the time and it isn't anything to worry too much about.Hope this helps, and feel free to ask any questions.Brooke

And when you go to see other Drs. do not tell them that you have seen someone else already. Make believe is the first time. One time I was schedule for surgery, went to get a second opinion and never needed to have that surgery. Take care, and wish you the best!!!

  • I had a similarly sounding bump on my leg. I also thought it was just a mosquito bite, but it kept itching forever. So after 3 weeks, I went to the dermatologist, and they could hardly figure it out. 3 of them came in looking at it, and finally one of them offered to cut it out, since it was hard and so itchy. They cut it out and as it turns out it was a blow fly larvae. I am so happy they only figured it out after they got it out. It kept itching because the larvae was still alive :(. I really hope that is not what you have, but I would sure tell you to go to the doctor.
