Hi all! I'm glad I found this forum and hope someone can help.
I'm 40 years old and have Never had ear infections until the past
couple of years.....and they have been chronic and I'm at the end of
my rope with it. I can't afford an EENT and have been visiting
a walk in clinic every few months for a round of anti inflammatory shots
cortisone and antibiotics....and pain pills. I think I have made the mistake
of waiting until I have a full blown ear infection to go to the doctor
and this is causing to completely miss and misunderstand the
symptoms that led to the infection and each time they are treating the final
cause and not the root of the problem....
anyways what I would like to know is what to do about the symptoms so that
they don't get to the point of infection.
Here are the symptoms:

2 years ago it started with severe ear itching....I actually
looked like a dog with ear mites

the itching is only mild now and is never as bad as the beginning

constant watery discharge from my ears....substance is clear
but most of the time very 'sticky'...this dries like fiberglass
in my ears, which i then feel the need to pick constantly

this past summer, i have had the same type substance in my nose
so i now have constant nose sores as well as crusty ear sores.

i have tried claritin and zyrtec...but for no more than three days
at a time so i'm not sure if i'm giving those meds a chance to work and
I'm probably waiting until the problem is too bad for them to work.

Please help! maybe recommend an OTC medication that will work
and maybe shed some light on what causes this. I'm at my wits end
and would rather go through labor and deliver (LOL) than to have
yet another ear infection! I'm serious it hurts that bad.

  • My husband has had the same problem for the last year and it is not getting better, he did go to the doctor and he prescribed him cortizone 2% and it helped until it ran out. Did you ever find anything to help or get rid of it. Thanks for any help we may get.

  • Nasal discharge can occur with otitis externa (outer ear infection) though it is not common. You may have had swimmer's ear that has progressed to a bad infection. I know medication can be expensive, but have you looked into the Walmart pharmacy? Some of their prescription drugs are insanely low priced such as antidepressants at $4 per mo! But that definitely does not hold true for all prescriptions. You may want to check it out. In addition, if the infection is fungal in nature, antibiotics will not be able to treat it. Then need antifungal ear drops. Good Luck!
