I have been diagonised as having viral labyrinthitis. I have seen an ENT and have had the condition for two months. This is the first time that I have had it. My question is this....The ENT said that I have complete and total hearing loss in my left ear, but when ever there is a loud noise near me then my left ear starts to ring louder. My family doctor had told me that this was a good sign, saying that the nerves in the ear are still working. The ENT said the nerves had died. Who is right? I've had no hearing at all in two months and was wondering if possibly the hearing would return sometime down the road. I am on no medication. Please advise.

  • Hi, I've had "viral labyrinthitis" for over 6 months! It was brought on by a bout of flu...? I had a severe chest infection, & soon after develop vertigo... described as "infection of the inner ear" - labyrinthitis...? Have you had ear problems before, mine have always been troublesome, operations, allergies, imbalance etc etc but never vertigo? I was told there is no research done on the inner ear & was put on Phenergan, Prochlorperazine & Prednisone (steroid). They help to a certain point, the vertigo decreases but then "comes back" - very, very unnerving! I also discovered a "herbal" remedy, named Tebonin, Ginko Biloba extract that increases bloodflow to the brain. Of all the stuff I take, that has helped me the most, the first time I can really say that something herbal has worked for me. It is expensive & does not seem to be a complete cure, but it really helps.

  • Thanks GFORCE.....I have never had any ear problems before. If I take any drugs which increase bloodflow to the ear then the ringing gets very loud. If I use nothing then the white noise is very dull, I can deal with that. My vertigo decreases a little each day and I'm told that it will become manageable. I still can't drive after 2 months. Even as a passenger when the car I'm in starts to go my head feels like it got left behind. Very unnerving indeed. Does anyone have experience with total hearing loss and the have it return after more than two months, what drugs help this take place
