My husband has been completely deaf in one ear since he was ten years old from the mumps. He has inner ear damage and hears constant three tones of ringing in that ear. In his other ear he has about 90% hearing. He hasn't been to a hearing specialist in about 25 years. Have they come out with something new for this problem? Even if they could eliminate the ringing would be great....he's used to not hearing out of that ear.

  • My husband has been completely deaf in one ear since he was ten years old from the mumps...Why no one has replied to your inquiry baffles me. Here are my non-professional thoughts:I can't offer hope for the ringing, but I wonder if what you descibe as"inner ear damage" is (largely or partly)middle ear damage. This can be easily tested by contrasting "Pure Tone Bone-Conduction Audiometry"to the result obtained by a normalAir-Conduction test.As I understand, middle ear damage is common for ENT infections. In my case, this was significantly corrected by a stapedectomy.I went from having an average 80 db loss in both ears toabout 30 in the operated ear. Now I can converse face to faceeven tho the operation was a partial abort dueobstruction by a herniated facial nerve. This was a life changing improvement for me. VERY much worth it.However it is not without risks due to the proximity of the facial nerve;the damage to which can render facial paralysis and even end your walking days.If he hears well in one ear, I strongly suggest you forget about it unless it is effecting his learning orhe exibits some other significantbrain "hemispheric specialization" deficit due to his significant hearing bias.Keep in mind tho, the hearing may notusefully return regardless, since extended intervals ofbrain disuse tend to come at a cost.http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=stapedectomy&num=100As to inner ear damage... even more riskyto ask for a change I believe. Count yer blessings and move on.Few people his age have even one 90% good ear.~ Best regards. Do NOT shake your children, people, and DO feed them your best. -LS: humanmilk.org
