Problems with Activia yogurt?

I started eating Activia yogurt once a day for the last month and a half, and initially was very happy with the results. But in the last week I've had a bout of intestinal cramping with very sharp intermittent pains, and fever. Pains are in stomach and lower ab area, with more pain on the right side. I'm wondering if (after reading some of the threads here tonight) that I should be checked for a problem with my appendix. Or is there a possibility that all the Activia yogurt (with the "good bacteria") could have caused a bacterial infection? Any thoughts?

  • OMG!!! YMMV's post made me laugh sooooo hard. Mostly because I can relate. I really hated to laugh that hard due to my terrible stomach pain, but darn!!! She hit the nail on the head. This stuff is awful! I decided to try vanilla Activia (foolishly) instead of normal yogurt for my fruit smoothies. I did this (foolishly) because of the bobardment of advertising I've been seeing of late. Never one to turn down "a challenge," I thought to myself, "What could it hurt?" I thought it would be better than "normal" yogurt. Why else Dannon spend so much on advertising?Well, let me tell you. After morning one I could not stand to be in the same room with myself. I do not live in a huge house, but even in a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house, I was running out of places to evacuate to. And I literally mean running, otherwise the horrible smell would follow me. "Okay," I say to myself, "This must be the beneficial bacteria kicking in. I must really have some bad stuff in my intestines and the bacteria are purging them from my system." On day two I repeated my morning smoothie ritual (Yogurt, frozen fruit, freeshly squeezzed OJ). Again, it was good I was home alone. I think my family would have disowned me especially after my poor DH had to sleep in the same bed with me the night before. Again, I convinced myself that this was a good thing. Then came the stomch ache/nausea/lack of appetite. I hadn't eaten anything out of the ordinary, but yet I STILL did not make the connection between Activia and my newly aquired stomach issues.Day three: Repeat day twoDay four: Wow! I don't smell! That's nice, but 4 hours after eating Activia my stomach hurts again. It's a gnawing pain and I'm feeling like I want to throw up, and now I have a headache! So I begin to wonder....."Is this yogurt making me sick?" Well, I feel like crap, can't really do much of anything else, so I will check the internet and see if this is a known issue or if I am just being paranoid about a seeming "coincidence."Expecting to find absolutely nothing, I was shocked to learn that there are tons of reports of the exact same nature. Thankfully, oh so thankfully, I have not yet experienced the raging yeast infection that others have described. I am hoping that I have stopped eating this poison in time, but I guess I won't know for a few more days. My advice......stick to normal yogurt.

  • I've eaten Activa every day for almost 3 weeks. Nothing happened the first week but the 2nd week I started getting pretty awful gas pains and was passing gas. Then I started having the bowel movements. I have NEVER been regular and most of my life have been lucky if I go to the bathroom once or twice a week. For years I had IBS and it was either diarhea or constipation. Then I had surgery last year and they had to remove a piece of tumor from a small portion of my bowel. That part of my bowel would not work for over a month and I was in and out of the hospital with nausea and vomiting until that portion of bowel kicked back in. Since then...no more IBS but a lot of "not going at all", which was why I started trying the Activia. To make a long story short I thought that after the intense bouts of gas and finally having bowel movements that the Activa was INDEED regulating me! That lasted about 2 or 3 days but during this 3rd week of eating Activia...I've had no gas, no cramps and NO BM's. NOTHING...so it appears that the Activia Challenge has failed for me and I'm going to get my money back.

  • I'm so relieved to find this information. I had been eating Activia low-fat strawberry yogurt for months (probably close to a year) and it appeared to do just as promised - regulate the system. About two weeks ago I started having major issues such as abdominal pain, rumbling noises in my stomach, nausea and finally, explosive diarrhea. In fact, there were bouts of the diarrhea that were so severe and came on so suddenly that I just made a huge mess. I ended up having to scrub my toilet and strip my bed at 3 o'clock in the morning. I also had a 9 pound weight loss in less than a month I presume due to the diarrhea and being unable to eat much of anything. Let me clarify - throughout the time I ate the Activia, I also suffered from extreme gas, embarrassing gas to the point where I was reluctant to go out in public! However, because my digestive system now appeared to be regulated, I didn't want to stop w/the Activia. Finally, when this last bout of nausea, diarrhea and weight loss hit, I decided Activia had to go. It's now been more than 2 weeks since I've eaten it and it appears that the symptoms have pretty much subsided (fingers crossed - the last two days have been symptom free). I think it's ridiculous that the consumer is not made aware of the possibility of side effects from eating this product. It's obvious to me after doing some research online that a great number of us are experiencing the same problem. I'm wondering if anyone has contacted Dannon and registered a complaint or if that's even worthwhile? Thanks for listening. I've been so worried that something major was going on with me and am happy to know I'm not alone.

  • I've experienced some of the symptoms that others have reported here. I've had the nausea, painful gas (though I was eating the stuff to help fight my normal gas), & frequent surprise visits to the bathroom.I was wondering if anyone else has experienced severe heartburn. I've had mild acid reflux for a while, but it has increased dramatically over the last couple of weeks. The only thing that has changed in my diet is the addition of Activia & a decrease in the amount of acidic foods (like V8) that I've been eating.

  • I'm still battling my run-in with the Activia challenge. I went through two four-packs before I had my first problem. No noticable changes until, on the eighth day, things got "interesting." It started with sulfur burps and nausea. That went on for a whole day. I was miserable, feeling pain in the stomach and liver area (I had my gall bladder out years ago) Then it moved into the lower GI, and like many others here have related, gut noises, pain, repeated sudden bathroom runs, more pain, OMG the pain... gotta go NOW and why does it feel like it's on fire?? That also lasted an entire day. I took the maximum allowed daily dose of Immodium, and it didn't help at all. The third day, things were quiet in the GI tract, but I felt like my abdomen had been used as a punching bag, for another whole day. I mostly spent the day in bed, moving a heating pad around to sooth the pummeled areas. Happy 4th of July! :p Then I was fine for almost two days. Until the sulfur burps started again. Note at this point, I hadn't eaten any Activia for 5 days. Round two was briefer, from burps to the end of the line only lasting about 18 hours. Yay, maybe the Activia beasties are giving up. About five days of near normalcy. Until the sulfur burps start again, this past Monday evening. #dingding# Round three! Noise, pain, etc woke me up very early on Tuesday morning. I had to stay home from work, missed my yoga class, spent a sucky day curled into a ball, waiting for the next command performance in the bathroom. Didn't bother with Immodium, since it didn't help with the first bout, and this one felt about the same. Yesterday, I was fine. Until I had mild sulfur burps again, after 10pm. I was ready to lose it. I only had boiled potatoes and toast for dinner! WTF? Not again!! I wanted to cry... I woke up early this morning with noise and pain in the large intestine, but for the first time, Immodium seems to have held off the trots. Good thing, since I really can't afford another day off work this week, and the ladies room on my floor is closed for repairs today. So far, so-so. I don't feel quite right, but no runs. I haven't eaten Activia in nearly two weeks. Get the stupid bifidus regularis, or whatever they call it, out of me already!! I'm ready to fast for a week, do a cleanse, anything it takes to kill this stuff off so I can get back to my regularly scheduled irregularity

  • I bought Peach and strawberry banana Activia about a week ago not because I had heard it was good or anything I just had the commercial stuck in my head. I was walking through the yogurt section singing Activvvviaaaaa! ha So I decided to try it out. I mean such good advertising it had to be good right? NO. I woke up about 6:30 this morning for my 8 am class and decided I would eat it for breakfast. I was feeling good ready to start my day and I love peach flavored things soooo everything was just fine. Not even kidding. EXACTLY and hour later a sudden rush of nausea came over me and I knew I had to throw up. I NEVER throw up and I have a very strong stomach. I rarely get sick. Im not allergic to ANYTHING. I don't eat yogurt that much but I will from time to time and honestly have never felt the way I felt this morning. It hit me like a big yellow school bus and I ended up puking it all up. Felt instantly better except for my pounding headache I have now. My system rejected it so fast thank God or I would probably be having diarrhea like everyone else. The taste is no where NEAR worth it. and thanks to Activia I missed my class that I actually needed to go to. DONT EAT THIS STUFF. bewareeee

I NEVER throw up, I absolutely hate it. I never get sick from foods, I have a very strong stomach. I think the last time I had to puke something up that I had just ate was when I got a quarter pounder from Mcdonalds about 4 or 5 years ago. yeah...exactly. anywaysss I felt fine as soon as I threw it up, but now I have this pounding headache. This stuff is no where NEAR worth the taste. Im glad that my system rejected this stuff right a way or I would probably have Diarrhea like everyone else. Thanks to Activia I now missed my class that I needed to go to. Didn't even see it coming. Stay AWAY from this stuff or consider yourself warned. I joined this site just so I could share this horrible experience!

  • THE GOOD THE BAD THE UGLYTHE TRUTH ABOUT ACTIVIA YOGURT BEWARE - of "Activia" yogurt. I too joined this site to warn others about this product. There are a lot of good products that help with digestion, such as Benefiber, Metamucil, Fiber Choice, plus natural foods such as whole wheat bread or multi-grain cereals. But I don't place Activia in the safe to use category. As one poster in this forum stated - it should come with a huge WARNING LABEL. I used it and really suffered. I ate one of the small cups of Activia, within an hour after eating this overly "commercialized" yogurt (supposedly a healthy treat), I was in Defcon 5! I thought my stomach was going to rip wide open and the "Alien" was going to spring forth! It was the most excruciating pain I have ever had. At first I thought I was having an appendicitis attack, but soon realized that the culprit must have been the yogurt. I had not eaten anything else and when you get severe food poisoning it usually hits within an hour to at the most two. This was not appendicitis, but the worst case of food poisoning ever and the culprit was Activia yogurt! I guess they don't call it "Activia" for nothing, but better apt names would be - Explosion, Blowout, Surge, Eruption, Shower Storm, Torment or - well you get the picture. Why would anyone knowingly take this destructive substance, it literally killed me for a solid night. Once I ate the yogurt as a late afternoon snack around 4 P.M. I knew it was the cause of my pain, because I had not eaten anything else since lunch. I curled up in a ball on the floor next to the bathroom for the entire night. My husband could not believe the pain I was in, he thought he was going to have to rush me to the hospital, but I couldn't even stand up. Here were my symptoms and side effects: Nausea; severe stomach cramps; severe gas and bloating; diarrhea; sweating; back pain and more. The next day after I had eliminated all of the yogurt from my body, I felt completely better. I went to the fridge and threw out every single cup of Activia yogurt. These people that make this should be sued! What are they really putting in their yogurt? For so many people to complain and have the same bad experience tells me that this product shouldn't even be on the shelves. And shame on the spokes person for promoting it with such vigor. (Of course money will make actors/actresses do crazy things.) I for one am glad I lived to tell about this and warn others. I only joined this forum to help warn others about this HORRIBLE product that should be removed from the store shelves. I have eaten other yogurt and never had the problem that I had eating Activia. Now I know that I am not alone and that this product is a Hazard to Your Health!! Join this forum and tell others about your own molotov cocktail experience by eating Activia yogurt. I will never again eat this product and I WARN EVERYONE TO STAY AWAY FROM ACTIVIA! Try some garbanzo beans / white, black or kidney beans / corn / peas / avocado / whole wheat pasta or bread / brown rice / edamame (those beans that look like green beans, but are soy beans) / lentils / pear / apple / artichoke / oatmeal / raspberries / broccoli / almonds / & barley. And doesn't all that sound better than the stomach crushing Activia yogurt?! So, the next time someone offers you activia yogurt - you can give an informed "THANKS - BUT NO THANKS - I LIKE MY STOMACH TOO MUCH!"

  • I felt the need to join this forum SPECIFICALLY TO COMMENT ON THIS THREAD!!! I have FIBROMYALGIA, CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME, IBS...among many other health issues. I decided to try ACTIVIA TO HELP WITH MY IBS which I have had for over 20 years. Seeing the adds on TV...I thought I would take the Activia Challenge...what could it hurt, right?I have been on it for about 6 months...missing the odd day in between here or there and I can't believe that I didn't put it together before now, that Activia has made me WORSE INSTEAD OF BETTER!!! Although, with having all of a zillion symptoms from all of my conditions I do see how it was overlooked and brushed off. I won't go into all of my symptoms...but I will tell you what led me to feeling the NEED to POST in this forum!!!For the most part, I have had my IBS fairly well contolled within the past 10 years or so. Wanting to better my health and try to eliminate even more of my IBS I decided to take the Activia Challenge! So I starting eating a small cup a day, unlike many of you I did not have a severe reaction right away...in fact I thought it was helping me. After saying this, I HAVE BEEN HAVING SYMPTOMS OF EXTREME BLOATING(looking like I'm about 6 months pregnant) , GAS,GAS AND GAS, NAUSEA, HORRIBLE GRUMBLING STOMACH, STOMACH ACHES, ABDOMINAL PAINS, DIZZY SPELLS, GREENISH BOWEL MOVEMENTS, DIARRHEA, CONSTIPATION. A FEELING OF NOT BEING EMPTIED PROPERLY, AND SWEATS!!! The pain has been so bad at times that I have searched the internet on gallbladder, liver and pancreas problems. Nothing seems to fit, especially as my symptoms have been periodic, about once or twice a month for a few days at a time. What led me to search Activia and IBS came around 3 am this morning. Needless to say I was SHOCKED BY WHAT I WAS READING, as many of you were as well!!! I had a small cup of Activia 2 nights ago at around 11pm just before bed. I was feeling fine and I had not eaten anything that I had not eaten before. Off to bed I went, only to be kept awake by my stomach aching, gurgling and so on. When I got up after a couple of hours, I could not even see my feet, as my stomach was bloated to a ridiculous size! I also felt nauseous...so I took a phazyme and some gravol, as this has always worked for me in the past...especially for the bloating. Waiting for the diarrhea to hit to no avail, I ended up sleeping on the couch for a few hours and was very surprised to find that none of the bloating had subsided and the nausea was still present. So I choked down a piece of toast as I had to eat something with my morning cocktail of the usual pills that I take for all of my conditions. Felt horrid all day, no appetite, with nausea and bloating still very present. Took another phayzyme somewhere during the day...it did not help!!! I did have a small bowel movement but felt that I needed to go some more...again...still waiting for the dreaded diarrhea...nothing!!! Ate another piece of toast with my night time pills and went to sleep for about 4 hours...when I woke up at 3am with my stomach still aching, still bloated and nauseous. I got up and started racking my brain about what I ate the right before all of this started...ACTIVIA!!! Then I started thinking back within the last 6 months...I have had these symptoms on and off, and even with my IBS I have NEVER had these symptoms continue this long. I also remember thinking that in the past months, my Nausea has been worse than it ever has been...with ALL of my conditions combined!!! I have been sick with Fibro/CFS for 26 years...and I have never, had the intensity of these symptoms until the last 6 months!!! That is when I decided to search the internet...and FOUND this FORUM. So the rest of my Activia is in the garbage and it is now almost 8am...have had a tiny pebble for a bowel movement, am nauseous,, gaseous and still bloated to the size I was when I was 6 months pregnant. I'm hoping this passes soon but I am grateful that I found this Forum because at least I know why this is happening now! That is why I felt COMPELLED to tell my story as if I can help even one person my post is worth it!!! I just hope that I can return to normal...or as normal as I get, as I already have so much to deal with physically...enough already!!! To all that have posted...thank you for sharing...and thanks for some laughs, too!!!
