Problems with Activia yogurt?

I started eating Activia yogurt once a day for the last month and a half, and initially was very happy with the results. But in the last week I've had a bout of intestinal cramping with very sharp intermittent pains, and fever. Pains are in stomach and lower ab area, with more pain on the right side. I'm wondering if (after reading some of the threads here tonight) that I should be checked for a problem with my appendix. Or is there a possibility that all the Activia yogurt (with the "good bacteria") could have caused a bacterial infection? Any thoughts?

  • I'm so relieved to find this information. I had been eating Activia low-fat strawberry yogurt for months (probably close to a year) and it appeared to do just as promised - regulate the system. About two weeks ago I started having major issues such as abdominal pain, rumbling noises in my stomach, nausea and finally, explosive diarrhea. In fact, there were bouts of the diarrhea that were so severe and came on so suddenly that I just made a huge mess. I ended up having to scrub my toilet and strip my bed at 3 o'clock in the morning. I also had a 9 pound weight loss in less than a month I presume due to the diarrhea and being unable to eat much of anything. Let me clarify - throughout the time I ate the Activia, I also suffered from extreme gas, embarrassing gas to the point where I was reluctant to go out in public! However, because my digestive system now appeared to be regulated, I didn't want to stop w/the Activia. Finally, when this last bout of nausea, diarrhea and weight loss hit, I decided Activia had to go. It's now been more than 2 weeks since I've eaten it and it appears that the symptoms have pretty much subsided (fingers crossed - the last two days have been symptom free). I think it's ridiculous that the consumer is not made aware of the possibility of side effects from eating this product. It's obvious to me after doing some research online that a great number of us are experiencing the same problem. I'm wondering if anyone has contacted Dannon and registered a complaint or if that's even worthwhile? Thanks for listening. I've been so worried that something major was going on with me and am happy to know I'm not alone.

  • This thread was just too tempting! After experiencing all the pain I've experienced today, and searching the web... I had to share.I've had a LOT of what you guys are having. I never really had any regularity issues, but I wanted to try activia. My mother loves it, and never had any complaints with it.First day... The peach, it tasted good! I started to get a little crampy, but I looked it over. But oh my god, it got worse. Very sharp pain and I just rushed to the bathroom as I felt completely nauseous! I felt as though I had to vomit, but fortunately nothing occurred. Besides that, I did have terrible diarrhea problems... before that, constipation. First I thought it might have been something else I ate.Day two... I figured out it wasn't it.No more for me!

  • I was eating Activia daily for about 2 weeks. Got nauseous, diarrhea, etc. Finally realized it was the yogurt! Stopped eating it, but the diarrhea persists. It's been 4 weeks of a restricted diet and negative lab tests. Any ideas on what I can do at this point?

  • That's absolutely incredible. So sorry. My Activia-related diarrhea went on for so long, the GI doc says she thinks I have lymphocytic colitis now. I haven't had the tests yet, they're scheduled for weeks away, but from what I've read, everything fits. I'm taking a fiber supplement and that's helping slow the diarrhea. At the risk of sounding crazy, when I started eating Activia I was perfectly healthy, just intermittently constipated. Now I've got colitis!!!!

  • It continues to amaze me that so many people are suffering adverse side effects from this yogurt! I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease. It's a hereditary auto-immune disease that is "triggered" by an event your body experiences, like pregnancy, surgery, or severe emotional distress. The only treatment is a life-long, gluten-free (wheat, rye, barley) diet. I am convinced the trigger for me was severe diarrhea caused by 2 1/2 - 3 weeks of daily Activia yogurt. Once I stopped eating it, the symptoms continued and have only stopped since I've stopped eating gluten-containing foods.

So no more Activia for me - maybe I can sell on e-bay.

  • Every once in awhile my stomach starts to feel sick. I take some zantac, drink loads of water and it goes away. I've chalked it up to whatever I've eaten that may have disagreed with me and never worried about it. Then a co-worker started singing the praises of Activia and told everyone to try it, and how her stomach problems totally disappeared. Well...needless to say my stomach started feeling sick again....so I said what the heck, I'll try it. I ate my first cup of this stuff a couple of hours ago, so far so good. BUT something told me to research this stuff and see what people had to say about it. I wish to ***l I would've done that, "before" I tried it. After reading this forum and others like it, I'm hoping I don't end up with the same problems. Thank goodness I only bought 4 and only ate 1. If by tomorrow I'm still ok, I'll try another, but I doubt if I'll buy this again. Good Lord @ the two poor ladies with the vaginal problems and I feel for the person that ended up with colitis. I can't believe a class action lawsuit hasn't been filed against this company for making so many people sick. There is NO WARNING label or even a small statement on their website that this may not be suitable for everyone. Does anybody even know ALL of the ingredients that are in this product? I can't imagine having full blown diarrhea and pain at work. I'd take my **s home in a heartbeat. All of you are so brave to have survived such agony and I commend you for warning everybody about this potential nightmare. With all the complaints, I can't believe Jamie Lee Curtis is still endorsing this stuff. She must have a very lucrative contract with them. If I end up on the toilet, sweating bullets and praying for relief....hopefully I can drag myself back here to post about it. thanks again everyone!

  • I've never had any issues with Activia but I just bought some blueberry acai flavored Yoplus (was buy 1 get 1 at publix!) and have pooped green twice now... I ate 1 yesterday and 1 just now so I guess I'll be running a little science experiment on myself to see if it stops! I haven't experienced any discomfort, cramping, diarrhea, etc like some of you other poor souls, but I'm also wondering if these types of yogurts can cause this? Also, I have been 'fasting' for the past few days so I know I haven't eaten anything that would normally turn my sh*t green.

  • Coincidentally, I also had my appendix removed under a month after eating Activia. Don't know if the yogurt is to blame, but very well could be, as I didn't have any symptoms of appendicitis until after eating Activia. I had the first symptom of appendicitis a few days after (you know, the classic hurting behind the navel area), and dismiss it as food poisoning, as I also had diarrhea. It went away, then a few weeks later, I get a worsening pain in the lower right area of my abdomen. I dismiss it, yet again, as some sort of pain from endometriosis. I did a little research on it and pulled up appendicitis, and immediately decided that I couldn't have it. I go to class the next morning and am a little concerned that the pain is still there and getting worse, but I decide to try to go to class anyways. By this time, I hadn't had a bowel movement in a few days, and that concerned me, but I told myself that it was prolly cuz I was constipated and would eventually feel it. This period of no poops was preceded by diarrhea yet again. Dismissed it as something that I ate and didn't do anything. By noon, I was so miserable that I didn't want to do anything. I could walk, but the pain was terrrible, and definitely not endometriosis. My friend whom I had class with, decided that it best to take me to the doctor, so we go to the urgent care and they referred us to the hospital, telling me that it's appendicitis and that the ER could run further tests. One CT scan and two rounds of 8-times-stronger-than-morphine narcotic IV meds later, it was confirmed that I had appendicitis. Within 8 hours of coming to the ER, I was in the OR, undergoing an emergency appendectomy. I was normally healthy, nearing 20, and then this happens. I'm out of classes for a week because of it, and was told that it was good that I came in when I did. My appendix hadn't ruptured, but it would have within the week. What I read tho is that it tends to rupture within 72 hours of the onset of symptoms. So the moral of the story, if you have abdominal pain, especially some that starts in the navel (belly button) area and gravitates to the lower right part of your abdomen and progressively gets worse, GO TO THE ER! There is a reason that they treat appendicitis so aggressively, and catching it early will reduce the chance of complications. I read somewhere that the chance of complications after a laparoscopic appendectomy is only 3% in those whose appendix hasn't ruptured, and 59% in those whose appendix has ruptured! Not only that, but people who have a ruptured appendix tend to spend 4-5 times longer in the hospital than those whose appendix hadn't ruptured. So, those who have had really bad abdominal pain and diarrhea from Activia, it won't hurt to get it looked at, especially if the pain gravitates to the lower right. I would rather get a CT done and get told that it's something else rather than letting it go and ending up dead from a ruptured appendix. And if you don't have insurance, I am sure that there are ways to get those bills paid. I want to make people aware of the risk of appendicitis and its possible link to Activia, and to urge people not to wait to see the doc if new pains emerge. Appendicitis does mask itself as food poisoning and GI upset, so definitely see the doc if you have it. It's better to be safe than sorry!

  • Something interesting that I read about activia that might pin point the problem better that i thought i would share:"Dannon Activa contains two kinds of sugar: sugar and fructose. Fructose is sweeter than sugar, but both sweeteners are naturally occurring. Sugar is taken from sugar cane, while fructose is found naturally in fruits and honey. There have been some documented cases of fructose intolerance, where individuals have a difficult time tolerating and digesting fructose. Those who have that intolerance should avoid Activia, as well as sodas, high fructose corn syrup and table sugar. Symptoms of fructose intolerance could be bloating, diarrhea, gas and abdominal pain."

  • I'm happy to have found this forum! I had food poisoning about a month and a half ago and have been battling with digestive issues ever since! I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I've always had a strong stomach, never been lactose intolerant, and have never had any kind of food allergy. I spoke with my doctor who didn't think anything very serious was wrong with me but took some blood and stool samples to see what could possibly be wrong. No issues there. She suggested that I take Florastor which helped me immensely...it regulated the loose bowel movements I had been having and basically let me continue with with life. Once I got off of it though...the symptoms came back! Gas pains, watery diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite. Finally, I realized that about a week after my food poisoning I had started on a regimen of Activia (my boyfriend ate it and it never seemed to cause him issues). I had been eating it every single day since my initial bout. I started to suspect that maybe it was the culprit and googled for adverse effects. I've found thousands of anecdotes about how it's causing similar symptoms to mine! I've been off of it for two days now, but I still have some gas. How long does this stuff say in your system? I'll give it a week and see what happens and post back.

  • I bought Peach and strawberry banana Activia about a week ago not because I had heard it was good or anything I just had the commercial stuck in my head. I was walking through the yogurt section singing Activvvviaaaaa! ha So I decided to try it out. I mean such good advertising it had to be good right? NO. I woke up about 6:30 this morning for my 8 am class and decided I would eat it for breakfast. I was feeling good ready to start my day and I love peach flavored things soooo everything was just fine. Not even kidding. EXACTLY and hour later a sudden rush of nausea came over me and I knew I had to throw up. I NEVER throw up and I have a very strong stomach. I rarely get sick. Im not allergic to ANYTHING. I don't eat yogurt that much but I will from time to time and honestly have never felt the way I felt this morning. It hit me like a big yellow school bus and I ended up puking it all up. Felt instantly better except for my pounding headache I have now. My system rejected it so fast thank God or I would probably be having diarrhea like everyone else. The taste is no where NEAR worth it. and thanks to Activia I missed my class that I actually needed to go to. DONT EAT THIS STUFF. bewareeee

It was just like having a stomach bug but with chills then moving to fever sometimes, when I finally made the connection of what was making me ill I came here to see everyone else having similar problems. There should be some sort of warning label on the package of possible side effects. Imagine if someone had a really important event or meeting to attend and were unable to attend because what you thought was a healthy choice actually was a complete opposite effect, I would be extremely mad which I already am from having to feel this way and having paid to feel this way .

  • THE GOOD THE BAD THE UGLYTHE TRUTH ABOUT ACTIVIA YOGURT BEWARE - of "Activia" yogurt. I too joined this site to warn others about this product. There are a lot of good products that help with digestion, such as Benefiber, Metamucil, Fiber Choice, plus natural foods such as whole wheat bread or multi-grain cereals. But I don't place Activia in the safe to use category. As one poster in this forum stated - it should come with a huge WARNING LABEL. I used it and really suffered. I ate one of the small cups of Activia, within an hour after eating this overly "commercialized" yogurt (supposedly a healthy treat), I was in Defcon 5! I thought my stomach was going to rip wide open and the "Alien" was going to spring forth! It was the most excruciating pain I have ever had. At first I thought I was having an appendicitis attack, but soon realized that the culprit must have been the yogurt. I had not eaten anything else and when you get severe food poisoning it usually hits within an hour to at the most two. This was not appendicitis, but the worst case of food poisoning ever and the culprit was Activia yogurt! I guess they don't call it "Activia" for nothing, but better apt names would be - Explosion, Blowout, Surge, Eruption, Shower Storm, Torment or - well you get the picture. Why would anyone knowingly take this destructive substance, it literally killed me for a solid night. Once I ate the yogurt as a late afternoon snack around 4 P.M. I knew it was the cause of my pain, because I had not eaten anything else since lunch. I curled up in a ball on the floor next to the bathroom for the entire night. My husband could not believe the pain I was in, he thought he was going to have to rush me to the hospital, but I couldn't even stand up. Here were my symptoms and side effects: Nausea; severe stomach cramps; severe gas and bloating; diarrhea; sweating; back pain and more. The next day after I had eliminated all of the yogurt from my body, I felt completely better. I went to the fridge and threw out every single cup of Activia yogurt. These people that make this should be sued! What are they really putting in their yogurt? For so many people to complain and have the same bad experience tells me that this product shouldn't even be on the shelves. And shame on the spokes person for promoting it with such vigor. (Of course money will make actors/actresses do crazy things.) I for one am glad I lived to tell about this and warn others. I only joined this forum to help warn others about this HORRIBLE product that should be removed from the store shelves. I have eaten other yogurt and never had the problem that I had eating Activia. Now I know that I am not alone and that this product is a Hazard to Your Health!! Join this forum and tell others about your own molotov cocktail experience by eating Activia yogurt. I will never again eat this product and I WARN EVERYONE TO STAY AWAY FROM ACTIVIA! Try some garbanzo beans / white, black or kidney beans / corn / peas / avocado / whole wheat pasta or bread / brown rice / edamame (those beans that look like green beans, but are soy beans) / lentils / pear / apple / artichoke / oatmeal / raspberries / broccoli / almonds / & barley. And doesn't all that sound better than the stomach crushing Activia yogurt?! So, the next time someone offers you activia yogurt - you can give an informed "THANKS - BUT NO THANKS - I LIKE MY STOMACH TOO MUCH!"

  • I felt the need to join this forum SPECIFICALLY TO COMMENT ON THIS THREAD!!! I have FIBROMYALGIA, CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME, IBS...among many other health issues. I decided to try ACTIVIA TO HELP WITH MY IBS which I have had for over 20 years. Seeing the adds on TV...I thought I would take the Activia Challenge...what could it hurt, right?I have been on it for about 6 months...missing the odd day in between here or there and I can't believe that I didn't put it together before now, that Activia has made me WORSE INSTEAD OF BETTER!!! Although, with having all of a zillion symptoms from all of my conditions I do see how it was overlooked and brushed off. I won't go into all of my symptoms...but I will tell you what led me to feeling the NEED to POST in this forum!!!For the most part, I have had my IBS fairly well contolled within the past 10 years or so. Wanting to better my health and try to eliminate even more of my IBS I decided to take the Activia Challenge! So I starting eating a small cup a day, unlike many of you I did not have a severe reaction right away...in fact I thought it was helping me. After saying this, I HAVE BEEN HAVING SYMPTOMS OF EXTREME BLOATING(looking like I'm about 6 months pregnant) , GAS,GAS AND GAS, NAUSEA, HORRIBLE GRUMBLING STOMACH, STOMACH ACHES, ABDOMINAL PAINS, DIZZY SPELLS, GREENISH BOWEL MOVEMENTS, DIARRHEA, CONSTIPATION. A FEELING OF NOT BEING EMPTIED PROPERLY, AND SWEATS!!! The pain has been so bad at times that I have searched the internet on gallbladder, liver and pancreas problems. Nothing seems to fit, especially as my symptoms have been periodic, about once or twice a month for a few days at a time. What led me to search Activia and IBS came around 3 am this morning. Needless to say I was SHOCKED BY WHAT I WAS READING, as many of you were as well!!! I had a small cup of Activia 2 nights ago at around 11pm just before bed. I was feeling fine and I had not eaten anything that I had not eaten before. Off to bed I went, only to be kept awake by my stomach aching, gurgling and so on. When I got up after a couple of hours, I could not even see my feet, as my stomach was bloated to a ridiculous size! I also felt nauseous...so I took a phazyme and some gravol, as this has always worked for me in the past...especially for the bloating. Waiting for the diarrhea to hit to no avail, I ended up sleeping on the couch for a few hours and was very surprised to find that none of the bloating had subsided and the nausea was still present. So I choked down a piece of toast as I had to eat something with my morning cocktail of the usual pills that I take for all of my conditions. Felt horrid all day, no appetite, with nausea and bloating still very present. Took another phayzyme somewhere during the day...it did not help!!! I did have a small bowel movement but felt that I needed to go some more...again...still waiting for the dreaded diarrhea...nothing!!! Ate another piece of toast with my night time pills and went to sleep for about 4 hours...when I woke up at 3am with my stomach still aching, still bloated and nauseous. I got up and started racking my brain about what I ate the right before all of this started...ACTIVIA!!! Then I started thinking back within the last 6 months...I have had these symptoms on and off, and even with my IBS I have NEVER had these symptoms continue this long. I also remember thinking that in the past months, my Nausea has been worse than it ever has been...with ALL of my conditions combined!!! I have been sick with Fibro/CFS for 26 years...and I have never, had the intensity of these symptoms until the last 6 months!!! That is when I decided to search the internet...and FOUND this FORUM. So the rest of my Activia is in the garbage and it is now almost 8am...have had a tiny pebble for a bowel movement, am nauseous,, gaseous and still bloated to the size I was when I was 6 months pregnant. I'm hoping this passes soon but I am grateful that I found this Forum because at least I know why this is happening now! That is why I felt COMPELLED to tell my story as if I can help even one person my post is worth it!!! I just hope that I can return to normal...or as normal as I get, as I already have so much to deal with physically...enough already!!! To all that have posted...thank you for sharing...and thanks for some laughs, too!!!

  • I AM SO GLAD I HAVE COME ACROSS THIS THREAD. I have been suffering on and off for 2-3 weeks and I can finally say that ACTIVIA has to be the link. Its been in my fridge for a few weeks now and I have been eating it on and off before christmas(2014) and been to the doctors because of cramping and diarrhea which is unexplained. Unfortunately as part of my low intake of food diet I ate a tub yesterday afternoon and this morning I had a lose movement.
