I had recently gotten over a nasty Peritonitus attack, about 3mos ago, which had thot at first was an appendicitus attack, as diid wife, and emergency room..They ran a few tests, and next thing I know was admitted and whisked off to a room and a week long of antibiotic IV...But the thing which I had noticed, and started bothering me most, was a foul
taste, of ANY and all food I tried to consume...This started a few days b4 I had gotten to hospital, and was to last almost 2mos...ALSO, a smell went with this, and was everywhere, and came from ANYthing which was
any kind of source for scent, smell, even air units, etc...! THIS was very spooky, and I did not eat because of for a little over 3wks ! ! I spoke with all doctors I came in contact with, and asked if any of them knew or had heard of this from anyone before, and they all said NO... I thought this strange, and figured for sure this had something to do with my bout, and perhaps it should be documented as a sign/symptom of Peritonitus as I started this taste/smell thing several days BEFORE the hospital ordeal...!
I had talked with many people, and finally had found one woman whom had had a case of Peritonitus, and knew EXACTLY what I was talking about with the Taste/Smell thing, and said all she could eat was beef boullion because of this..And grape juice...Everything else had the foul taste ! I was able to eat apple/apple juice only, which was unaffected by
the smell/taste thing, but that was all...For almost 3mos... Does ANYONE
know about this, what was or caused, or IS IT a symptom of Peritonitus ? ? ? This spooked me more than anything ! ! ! !

  • Oh..I failed to mention...This was all brought on, as after CT scan, andsome other tests, found I had Diverticulitis, which I never new, nor hadheard about..! Anyhow, one of the polyps had ruptered, hence causing this whole mess..! Nasty stuff, and was told alot can be done by diet,(NO peanuts/nuts family, seeds, etc...) They tend to get stuck in thesepockets, do not pass, and then can cause the rupture, as in my case..! NOT very pleasant, and in reality, I had made peace...Several of myDoctors told me I "Dodged the bullet" ! ! ! Was not my time I suppose, but will be watching alot of diet intake...! Thanx for any info..., and God Bless

  • So glad to finally see I am not the only one. Not one doctor has been able to answer me about this. I had an unknown ulcer that perforated in Sept, I laid a few days in emergency without diagnosis, resulting in peritonitis, then finally, after three CT scans, emergency surgery. I woke a few days later to incredible sense of smell and horrific sense of taste. I was able to detect where my husband had placed my cigarettes when I got home, had to have flowers in my hospital room removed. But the taste buds, they were a surprise. Foods I had adored all my life, including coffee, V8, bleu cheese, hummus, Drambuie, almost everything tasted like garbage. Six weeks later, taste buds have settled down and almost everything tastes normal, but not everything. AND, I still have to learn or hear from ANY doctor as to why.Oh, and in the hospital, my vision went insane. Despite reading glasses, I could not read or crochet, making those three weeks horribly boring. Thankfully, my vision recovered within a few weeks of being home. Another girlfriend experienced the same thing, but, again, not one doctor has or can explain. Anne

I have since found another person, a woman approx. 50 y.o. whom discussed with, and had hadthe same occurence and problems....The only food/drink she was able to eat, was grapejuice, and apples...some cheddar cheese....Everything else was the foul, nasty stuff...! This is so odd, and I have spoke as recent as last month to another Dr., and they had no idea as what was cause...! Well, has been about 8mos, and most all foods are backto normal, but still, every once & while have something which somehow seems to trigger, alltho much milder than the original problem..! Best to you, Anne...! If you ever DO hearanything about this, please let me know ? Thanx....
