Constant Diarrhea

OK. I'm not proud to be sharing this, but this looks like a proper place so here goes.

Last week after work I went out and had quite a few beers with the guys. The next morning I got up, went to the bathroom and had a BM made up of almost entirely a yellowish liquid. It felt like crapping acid. No big deal, I thought. Just the result of a night of unusually heavy drinking. Everything will be fine by tomorrow. Well...it's 6 days later and I'm still excreting this yellowish acidic fluid. It doesn't matter what I eat or drink, it all comes out the same. (And no, I haven't had a beer ar any other alcohol since that night last week.)

I've tried Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta, Immodium A-D, and even a prescription drug designed to slow down peristalsis. NOTHING has worked so far. I've looked on the Internet for various symptoms and have deduced that I might have an infection, a fecal impaction, or a problem related to some other internal organ than my intestines.

For fear of dehydration I've been drinking lots of water and Gatorade. I feel fine other than every few hours I feel like I'm going to crap my pants and I have to drop whatever I'm doing and run to the bathroom. It's even interrupting my sleep. Every 2 or 3 hours at night, I'm awake and on the toilet for awhile.

Anybody have any ideas what could be wrong with me or have any surefire cures for diarrhea? I'm at the end of my rope here, and since I don't have any health insurance (welcome to America) a Doctor is my last resort. I'll be willing to listen to anything anyone has to say. I just want a solution. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

  • Any long lasting diarreah condition needs to be looked at by a doctor. If it last more then 2 weeks you have to see one. There is no at home remedy for any diarreah lasting longer then that. You could have anything from c.diff to IBD.

  • My research has shown that yellowish stuff like that can indicate a liver problem. Go get it checked out!

  • I have the same problem and have had it for at least 6 months. I've had extensive tests - blood serum, stool analysis, endoscopy that went down through the stomach to the small intestine, and a sigmoidoscopy. Tissue was taken from the last two tests for biopsy. I see six specialists at the Mayo Cliinic and none of them can come up with an answer. I had a test done for celiac/sprue and it was negative. They also checked for parasites and bacteria and all negative. The only relief I can get is by taking Imodium every 2-3 days but that only masks the problem. I have lost 30 lbs. and feel very weak.I have decided to try probiotics and see what that will do. I started yesterday so here's hoping it will work.Good luck!

  • I'm not sure about yellowish liquid but severe diarrhea, especially after drinking beer, could indicate possible celiac disease (gluten intolerance) which is definitely worth looking into by seeing a gastroenterologist.

  • The yellowish acidic stools would, I believe, indicate a liver and/or gallbladder problem. Its possibly related to Celiac, but I would suspect the long-term effects of alchohol overconsumption. Binge drinking once a week is much worse for you than drinking two beers a night.I'm not saying you binge drink, or ever had - its just what the symptoms sound like. There could also be an infection of some sort hurting those organs. Anyway, looking at the date on this post, I hope you saw a doctor uhh, about a month ago :P

  • OK, Speed,I know what youv'e been going through. I also got exactly the same problem about two years ago and have been trying to find and answer. I even thought having my gall bladder out would help. No, no difference. It seems we are lacking or stopped producing an enzyme that breaks down fats. For a long time I could stave off large accidents daily by eating two or more of those Benefiber tablets a day, but if I stopped for one day, back to the yellow-orange acid problem. The doctor had also given me a prescription of Questran, which is said to lower cholesterol also, but I found the fiber tabs worked just as well and I didn't need a perscription. But, this last month I have discovered raw, unpastuerized milK provides all the enzymes I have been missing and it works to provide all the neccessary nutrients to live on. When I have a glass or two a day, there is no problem. The largest problem is finding a store in a state that sells organic grass fed cow milk to the public. I live in AZ so they just started selling this year. Calif. also is known to sell it, in health food stores. I have had no problems in the whole month I started drinking raw milk. I hope you can find some. Good luck

  • Wow! what a relief to know I am NOT the only one! I had a gall bladder removed a year ago, and my small intestine was nicked 3 times during surgery. I got septic and peritonitis and had an emergency colon resection. They did take out my ileocecal valve as well. I actually LIVE in the bathroom! In fact, I have a TV tray with a laptop in the bathroom. It is totally disgusting that I have to live this way. I have been to the Mayo Clinic in MN twice and have had 4 colonoscopies, an endoscopy, a small bowel follow through, barium tests..you name it. I am waiting for a malabsorption study to come back from Mayo yet.I take the Questran, however; all that does is prolong the inevitable for a few hours..then I make it up triple time! My stomach is distended, I have a lot of pain, bloating..etc. My stools look like chocolate cake batter to water, to yellow acid...my butt is history and I cry because of the pain in my anus. Sorry to be so graphic, but I need help. I have seen 6 different Dr.s and no one knows what to do! I have between 15 - 20 bowel movements a day, could be more since I live in here. I lose control and have accidents. I am home bound and get out to go to store down the street about once a week if I take Immodium, but I hate the thought of making up for lost time out of bathroom...anyone have ANY ideas!! PLEASE..I am soooooooo desparate! I am missing out on life. I was a happy person and worked at a good job, now I lost my job and am depressed and can't get anyone to fix me.Thank you for listening!

  • You could have a bad problem with vitamin defiency. Try to get some b12 and also my daughters boyfriend had this problem. They found some information that told you to use liquid pectin. It will help to thick the stool and therefore helping to stop the loose stool. You can find it in the canning section at local storesl. May it could help you. Good luck

I am on FMLA from work because I work on the phones all day If I have to go to the bathroom I would have to hang up on customers to do so just so that I make it. I have had the same test as you and they did fine a large overgrowth on my small bowel filled with bacteria. This will not allow my system to absorb b-12. I currently take b-12 shots. You really need to get tested for low b-12 levels cause you can do injury to yourself. I recently fell and sprained 2 fingers and brused my ribs I thought it was because I cant keep food in my system but it was because of my low b-12 that I felt dissy and fell. Please call your doctor and have him check it right away. Good luck to you we will get through this.

  • Ok guys. I have had severe problems since surgery 2 years ago. I finally found something that helps alot. It is called Align. Go to align.com and order it. It will change your life. I also buy a product called digestive enzyme at Wallgreens, manufactured by the Ganeden company. I take an Align in the morning and take a digestive enzyme before each meal.Promise that I have had a life change with this. And remember, no soda, no beer makes an incredibel difference. And try to stay away from dairy for a week and see if that helps. Also get some acidophilus from Trader Joes or Sprouts to replace good bacteria in your body. Any antibiotic takes this away from your body and you need to replace it.

  • WOW! Little did I know that when I posted that nine months ago it would turn out to be such a popular topic! I hope the discussion has helped some of you. Personally, after a few more days I was back to normal. I think I drank too much that night and my liver kind of crapped out on me. But those days are far behind now! Hope you're all doing well.

  • Reading your postings eases my heart. I had my gall bladder removed four years ago after being misdiagnosed 3x's. Now I have chronic acid yellow diarrhea. Like clockwork--without fail--15 minutes after eating results in me rushing to the restroom. My Dr. first suggested adding bulk forming fiber to my diet--it didn't work. I stopped eating at work. I changed doctors...and finally my new Dr. changed my meds. He also tested my stool--it turned out that I have an overgrowth of yeast in my intestine. He prescribed 40mg. of Pepcid. I mentioned to him that I had become so paranoid that I felt like I could literally make myself have diarrhea because of the stress. He prescribed a low dose of Nortitriptilyn (poor spelling) because he said "it would help connect my brain to my intestine" and told me to take Acidophillus/Probiotic (Trader Joes) once a week. It worked. All summer I was diarrhea free. Then about a month ago...it started again--I really think it is related to stress. The acidophillus/probiotic helps--so I am back to that. To all of you who were out and about and that sudden fear comes over your face when you realize you need to run to the bathroom--I feel for you...accidents like this are horrible experiences--there is hope out there...change doctors...look for an alternative diagnosis.

  • i had a similar problem recently when i drank way too much the other night like the man in the original post, but it seems to be getting slowly better. for many of you i'm wondering if you might want to get tested for crohn's disease. it's fairly rare, but my father had it and it can get pretty serious if not treated. you may want to look into it.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crohn's_diseasegood luck all, i hope you can find proper treatment to ease your discomfort.

  • Hi, Unfortunately, your story sounds all too familiar. I had 20 inches resected 5 years ago due to Crohn's disease and have had nothing but problems since. They removed my ileocecal valve along with part of the ileum. Recently I had my gallbladder removed as well. I have bile acid diarreah 8 to 10 times a day. I take Lomotil ( Immodium) and Welchol. Doesn't help enough!!! I am thinking of trying Humira. If you ever find an answer other than Crohn's disease and oh yeah we took out that valve let me know, cause this is a miserable way to live. Wow! what a relief to know I am NOT the only one! • All, I think it may be an allergy to cola products. I am noticing a trend that if i drink cola products as in too many in a short period of time, i get the following.1. Bloating/Gassy2. Burping with a bad smell, odor to it3. or flatulatence instead which then leads to4. Diarrhea 10 -15 times a day, until i have emptied it seems5. Then if i havent taken Flagyl, i am constipated, and poof again start the routine above again. For some reason, Flagyl solves this, as it seems that my white blood count goes up, and I believe is triggered by cola, this is something I have noticed over the last 4 years. I hope this helps, also, I have a allergic reaction to oats when i got tested by a food allergist.comments????

  • WOW!!!!!Sounds like I've come to the right place. I always have bowel cramping after eating and have to empty my bowel right away.I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome in 1992 after having an upper GI series and lower bowel series of tests.I'm going for my first colonoscopy shortly. I've read so much on gastro disorders, it's not funny. What's really scary is here lately (last couple of weeks), I've noticed fresh blood in my stools. I have tried the probiotics from intestinal flora to Digestive Advantage for Irritable Bowel Syndrome made by Ganeden Biotech, Inc. which helped a little but not a lot.I'm beginning to suspect being alergic to all foods because it really doesn't matter what I eat - I have to go right away afterwards. But I do know that dairy products makes it worse!!!!Also I have pain and tenderness in my rectum - I guess from all the bouts with the diarrhea.I have exhibited (not to be too graphic) all the colors in the spectrum - from yellow to green to orange (now that's wierd) to black. And they are very loose usually - sometimes water. And now there's blood.Hopefully they will find out what the ***l it is because I'm quite sick of living this way. I suspect it could be Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis which are both Inflammatory Bowel diseases and are quite serious. But I'll hopefully know if anything shows up on the colonoscopy. My fear is they probably won't find anything and I'll be one of those "Mystery Diagnosis" patients.I've suffered for years with this beginning in the late 80's so I guess if it was colon cancer, I would've been dead by now. It's just good to hear that I'm not alone apparently.Any ideas?????
