Hi there. I am a 21 year old relatively healthy female, my only main concern is for as long as I can remember I have had problems with constipation. I have never been regular and sometimes go longer than 2 weeks without having a bowel movement. I have tried everything from taking Benefiber and eating more fiber-rich foods and nothing seems to work. There is alot of discomfort whenever I do make a BM because the stool is usually large and I will bleed from the size (at least I think it's from the size)

I have seen my doctor about this and he had prescribed me Amitiza which was working for the first couple weeks I was on it, but then I stopped going every day and started going maybe once a week and the pill itself made me extremely nauseous. He has taken me off Amitiza since I had just found out I am pregnant with my second. So now I'm back to square one and I have no idea what to do.

I do have a history of colon cancer in my family and am fearing that if I don't get this taken care of, it will result to that.

Has anybody ever experienced anything like this and what have you done to treat this besides from the obvious answers (increasing fiber, more fluid intake..etc)

Thanks so much for reading!

  • Hi there! And yes, there is someone with your same problems (atleast one). me! I'm 49 and I have had trouble since I can remember. I would love to tell you the cure all, but I'm afraid I have not found it yet. I've tried this and that, and it would work for a few days and then it is like my body goes back to the way it was made. I've talked to doctors about it, but I don't think any of them have understood the degree of my constipation. Here lately, I've done the Fleet enimas regularly just to get some relief. I"m not sure how bad that is for me, but the consequence seems to be worse. I will tell you one thing that still amazes me. I bought a colon cleanse a while back...Dr. Nuturia? I think...I'll check at home tonight to be sure, but that is the most amazing product I've tried, and believe you me, I've tried lots. You drink a herbal tea at night, and it has never failed to work for me...I'm not sure about drinking it every night after the cleanse tho, so I'm trying something new - drinking it 2 or 3 times a week. Have you tried a colon cleanse before? If you would like more info on it, just ask. I'll check back later. Linda

  • It's difficult to suggest remedies when you are pregnant. I would try eliminating all wheat/dairy/processed foods from your diet. Get a good quality PROBIOTIC and take this religiously. Find a nondairy source. Take dried fruits like prunes, dates. Try slippery elm tea ( do not take this regularly while pregnant). Consider trying acupuncture to help with your symptoms. This is very safe as long as you let your practitioner know you are pregnant. Stay away from harsh laxatives, even herbal ones like senna. Try hot salt water tea with lemon in the early am. Yoga can be very helpful. Best wishesDOM

  • Thank you both for responding :) I have never tried a colon cleanse before...well nothing labeled like that. I have tried taking laxatives before and I'm too scared to try it again after my last experience. I took that women's correctol a few months ago and since it had been over 2 weeks since I last went, I threw my body into shock and my doctor said it could've killed me...something about my blood vessels were being restricted and my brain wasn't getting enough oxygen. I don't know if it was just a reaction to that brand of laxative or what...but no more laxatives for me lol. And I have never tried yoga exactly, but I have always included at least 30 minutes of exercise into my routine during my daughter naptime. I've never tried herbal teas...just green tea...but I will speak to my gyno and see what is safe and what he would recommend because this is killing me. And to top off the problem that I have normally...pregnancy makes it worse and I'm so uncomfortable and crampy all the time. Are the colon cleansers safe to use while being pregnant because I am desperate to try anything! And it's nice to know that I'm not the only out there who experiences this and it's really kind of an embarassing subject to talk about lol but thanks so much for taking the time to reply to my post....it really means alot. ~Jess

  • Hi Jess,Not sure about the cleanse since you are pregnant...That's a whole different ballgame, isn't it? Check with your doctor, but you may have to wait on that idea.I do know that flaxseed helped me one time, but then like most things, seemed to be less effective after a while, but that might be one thing you could take while pregnant..it's suppose to be very good for you and healthy. I understand the flaxseed has to be grinded up.I was in a pretty vigorous workout program for a few months, and that didn't seem to help one bit! but never have tried the Yoga...so that might help...maybe I should try that...lolIf you can drink the prune juice or eat some prunes, that should help too...and should be safe.Linda

ALWAYS. and i hated going days and days without getting rid of my waste. i turned to enemas. one every other day or so. the reason for my constipation was the pills i had been taking for a couple years. hydrocodone, a pain killer. lots of medicines cause this. you didnt say if you do take meds or not, but if you do, look into that. since ive been off my persciption, i have gone back to normal.
