Hi i was diagnosed with mild crohns about 20 years ago when i was about 40. The only symtoms are diarrhea which gets worse until i have to take prednisalone(steroid)This stops the diarrhea but i have to keep taking the steroids for at least 6 weeks or it just returns. I have had regular blood tests and colonoscopys, all ok.I take Dipentum for this but it seems to make the symtoms worse so tend to avoid it.When i was first diagnosed i was a regular alcohol drinker and think that that was the real reason for the diarrhea but it has become chronic although i dont drink much nowadays. My main worry is the effect of taking steroids over a long period and wish i could get off it. Can anybody help please?

  • Has anyone ever suggested that you may have a Gluten intolerance or Celiac disease? I think you should try the no cost, no meds, no test method and cut wheat completely out of your diet. It may take up to 2 weeks for you to see any change. If you have atrophed "Villi" in your intestine - it will take a few to heal them. Celiac is an auto-immune disease. Your body attacks itself when you eat "Gluten". Then the villi cannot absorb any nutrients from the food you eat and it strips it from your bones. Then osterosis is then a problem. It costs nothing to try it. Good luck!

  • Thanks for replying "beach lady" I certainly didn't think about these 2 possibilities and I will try it out soon. At the moment I am trying new pills prescribed by a specialist and have to take them for 6 weeks, after that, if there is no change I will certainly try your suggestions,as you say, nothing to lose.

  • I don't know what the new pills are but I have had Crohn's disease for 30 years although I would hardly say I suffer from it. It has gotten better and better and perhaps the main thing that has helped is probiotics. PB8 is a convenient brand because it requires no refrigeration and is fairly easy to find, (in a decent health food store), A much better one, for me anyway, is lacto-flamx , made by metagenics. Even yogurt would probably help. I used to think I was lactose intolerant, or maybe I was. but now I eat yogurt every day.

  • Hi I have a serious bowel condition and no longer have a colon, its pretty hideous, and my friend has Crohns, but she had it really bad where she had ulcers in her eyes and well as her bowel and mouth. Contact the Crohns association for more exact points on the symptoms, some people can live easily with Crohns, depending on the severity, though I dont think if you had it, you wouldnt of known by now. Change in diet and no alcohol is a good start
