Can a Colonoscopy cause problems with a Diverticula ?

I have had a Diverticula for 15 to 20 years, usually causes little if any discomfort. Only really got bad 2 or 3 times counting the night when I think I first got it. My GP wants me to get a Screening Colonoscopy. Fine and well...but I had some serious pain when he did a Sigmoidoscopy on me in '92...I had to tell him to quit. He seems to have forgotten that, so after reminding him he says I'll be knocked-out and won't feel a thing. I had him set it up, but now I'm having second thoughts. What happens if I can't yell "uncle"? Does my colon get blown-out? Do I end up on an operating table without even knowing who's going to be cutting on me or his success rate? Do I end up with a bag for the rest of my life? Man, seems a bit like a crap shoot, no pun intended. What are the chances of the procedure causing serious damage to my Diverticula?
