Question: I went to Peru 2 years ago and I ate salads there and got a virus. I since have had diarea\soft stools pretty much daily. I had "dangerously low" minerals two months after the Peru visit and they put me on potassium, magnisium suplements. The problem, I guess I've always had heart palpitations, but since the hospital visit following Peru, now i feel them all the time and they do wierd things like flutter, go ker-plunk (feels like), or a swooshing feeling. It's pretty creepy. I take atenolol 25 mg, and clonezapam for palpitations but I want to get off of the clonezapam. When I try to stop taking C the palps come back, I get tightness in the chest and a squeezing feeling. I've also had total body numbness that was very similar to "guillian barre" syndrom only not a sever case. I occasionally get numb lips, and I can't tell if my arms or legs are numb usually because I just lack any feeling at all. Cold doesn't bother me as much, heat, etc. I've had ultrasounds, and echos etc, a stress test (twice), resting test. They say everything is fine, but I really don't like the palpitations or the chest discomfort. I have also developed a mean case of heartburn, and i have a hiatal hurnia. And I have anxiety attacks where my heart starts to race, my blood pressure goes up as high as 180/119 ON BP meds! (even when sound asleep and i wake not knowing anything is wrong) Any suggestions?

  • have you had a recent 24 hour holter monitor? if you have not ever had one- might be a good idea to f/u with cardiologist. you actually wear a monitor for 24 hours and it tracks the activity. it'll tell your doc. what rhythm you were in / your avg. heart rate. also, may need to change beta blocker or adjust dose. go see your doctor though- a cardiologist or internist for this. do not adjust meds or stop abruptly without your doctor's assistance.

  • How do you know it was a virus you contracted in Peru? Did they do a complete stool test for parasites, giardia, bacterial infections? If not they certainly should have. If you were eating salads it would more likely be a bacterial or protozoa or parasitic infection than viral. Please get a complete stool test done if you haven't already. You should just rule this out. Potassium, magnesium is helpful for palps, but you migh also want to try B vitamins, folic acid, and EFA's.Best wishes.,DOM

  • I get sort of numb in face around mouth, checks and tongue and pain in the back of my neck and head and a fast heart beat so fast I have to bear down. It's hard to think what I'm doing at times. Sometimes it feels like it's in one side of my body and I think it's a mini stroke or I'm going to have a stroke but the VA never finds anything wrong except some things are low like iron, potassium and some other things;those 2 mostly. But I doubt it's my iron because I'm on iron now of 360 mg perscribed by the doc but I'm still having problems. I took a potassium pill tonight and ate a few bananas and several can's of low sodium V-8 tomato juice but it's only seeming to get worse. I am also extremely thirsty when this happens. It started when I left Zweibruecken, germany, back in 1990 when I got out of the military there. I had just had a baby by emer c-section. It's only gotten worse over the years. I am 100% disabled veteran but I'm not service connected for this. Two years ago I was diagnosed with Asthma and don't know if this is a symptom of what's going one with this numbness;I doubt it. I contracted herpes in 1998 from a man whom lied to me, saying he had no disease. I'm almost 50 yr old female. Seems like my health is going down the tubes. Anyone know where I can start? I have no health ins.

I have no health ins. I would post your symptoms on the B12 deficiency thread, and ask for help there. With iron deficiency there is often B12 deficiency and it is often overlooked by docs. B12 def can cause irreversible neurological symptoms and mimics MS and alzheimers. You may want to try a sublingual B12 and see if your symptoms improve. 360 mg of iron is a huge dose - how long have you been taking this? Have you had your levels tested recently? If not, then get your iron rechecked and make sure they test your b12. Get copies of your blood work, don't just accept a "normal" range. If your B12 levels are just under 500 you may still have a deficiency. Good food sources of iron include blackstrap molasses, spinach, and organ meats. Best wishesDOM

  • Ask your doctor if you can try atenolol. It is the best medication for rapid heart rate. It is also very cheap.
