I am 23 years old with family history of cancer in my family. The other day I was shaving my armpits when I felt a hard knot in my left armpit. I pressed on it and it hurt. Once out of the shower, I looked in the morrior but couldn't visibly see the knot/lump. Over the course of a couple days, the knot feels as though it has grown in size. I have looked at websites and read some on breast cancer. However, I thought breast cancer could only affect women of a certain age range? I am going to call my doctor tomorrow morning and make an apointment. I just worried and scared. Has anyone else gone through what I'm going through? Any thoughts on what I need to tell my doctor?

  • Do not be alarmed, it could be possible that you just have an ingrowing hair from shaving your armpits. I have had them before and they usually go away within a few days if left alone. You mention that it has got bigger in a few days - this makes it less likely to be a type of tumour (benign or otherwise). You are just right going to see your doctor - they will be able to reassure you of what might have caused it.It is important to do regular breast examinations and up into the armpit as well, making sure you know the consistancy (eg lumpy) of your breasts through out the monthly cycle.I hope this helps.
