I'm looking for a facility that specializes in NPH treatment and want to get the very best possible within the U.S. Can anyone tell me where I can get information to help with this decision?

  • My mother was misdiagnosed by over 2o physicians including 2 neurologists and a neurosurgeon. We finally took her to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL and they diagnosed her within days after a year of suffering. She went in a wheelchair wearing a diaper and walked out. Have you had an MRI of the brain? Look for enlarged ventricles of the brain. Even slight enlargement can make the difference. The best diagnostic test for this is a spinal tap where they draw off about 30cc of spinal fluid. They video tape your walking prior to the tap, immediately after the tap and over the next few days. You can tell immediately that turning is far easier right after the tap. This will help to tell if a shunt would be a good treatment for your problem. After the tap my mother could turn far easier when walking. She improved over the next 24 hours and then started the decline again as the spinal fluid started to build up again in the ventricles of the brain. The treatment was the insertion of a shunt into the ventricle of the brain (about a 40 minute procedure). She was immediately better. When she went back for her 8 week checkup, she brought her golf clubs and played golf. It is really a miracle and such a crime that it is so commonly misdiagnosed. Her Neurologist was Dr. Chabola and Neurosurgeon was Reimer. Hope this is helpful to you.

  • Forgot to tell you about a second location that specializes in NPH diagnosis and treatment. It is the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Harold Young. Here is the link. www.nph.vcu.edu/MCVserv.htm I had an appointment set up for there next if Mayo did not help her but luckily Mayo was excellent. Wishing you the very best.
