genetic predisposition of stroke and Binswanger's Dementia

My fiance has a family history (paternal) of multiple strokes with it leading to Binswanger's Dementia in his father's case.

Has a genetic correlation been explored?
Have patterns of onset and symptomatology been established between generations?
Are there preventative measures to be taken outside of being aware of high blood pressure and diabetes?

Thanks for your help. :)
