Left flank - odd sensation

I have a very strange sensation in my left flank. Sometimes it is higher up by and sometimes it is lower but always on the left side.
It isn't a pain but an annoyance. It sort of feels like a fist on the inside trying to push out or a big bubble. It is so hard to explain that I embarrassed myself at my doctors office trying to tell him what was going on. I did have an xray which was clean and he wanted me to go for a MRI but I haven't yet as I am claustrophobic.
Does anyone out there have any idea of what this is or where I should go for help?
It isn't a pain but it is so totally annoying that it is driving me insane.
Thanks much.

  • this sounds to me as if it could be of spinal origin.pressure on a nervein your neck or high in your back could well account for it.is there something you do at work or at play that may be straining your upper back?have you had an accident perhaps preceding the start of symptoms? treat as a mild spinal strain while it is investigated further.ordinary activity mitigated by care while resisting any temptation to accelerate matters by exercisemay help.a scan of the upper spine may reveal the source of the problem as no x-ray will..

  • I am also claustrophobic but had to have my third MRI recently. What really hepled was wearing some eye masks so if I opened my eyes I was not aware of how close the machine surrounded me... and they allowed me to play a CD of my favourite music, it really helped my 1 hr , 1o min session.I have a very strange sensation in my left flank. • I didn't go for a MRI as I am a chicken. I get really spooked in there and decided to come on here and find out if anyone else had this.I am thinking more and more that it is some kind of nerve thing as my hand goes numb too on occasion. Does that happen to you?

  • No, I don't get any numbness. Also no paid really, just discomfort. When I sit in my car it feels like my back muscles are bigger on the left flank side vs right flank side - I rarely notice it otherwise. Could it be IBS?

  • It is almost impossible to say what is wrong with you the best diagnostic tool the doctors have is an mri even that may not reveal your problem but it is the most likely way you will find out what your problem is.

The doc said I need to stretch and get a massage but I think it is much more than that. I requested an MRI but the doc said that isn't necessary. I just want to know why I am feeling like something is moving on my left flank area. No pain, just discomfort. Claudia did you ever find out this answer? This just started 4 Feb 10. Thanks for any helpful information. Janice

No pain, no other issues, just discomfort and a bubbly feeling. My doc did some bloodwork, since I was due for a physical, but I was feeling nervous, so I checked it out on my own for quicker answers. Do you have a verdice Claudia?

Do you have a verdice Claudia?I have the same sensation and all of the ultrasounds have not yielded a problem. I did hear from a friend, however, that diet coke can cause that area to be worse. So I stopped drinking diet sodas and it definitely made a difference. My dr. said, "bingo" that the sorbitol causes issues in the gastro intensinal system and that area does have a presence. I have tried going back to having a diet soda here and there, and it does return, each time. Interesting...

Thanks for any helpful information. JaniceI have the same sensation. It started in the last week of June. I have not gone to the doctor because I was embarrased to have to describe the feeling as if something was moving around under my skin or as if a muscle fell asleep it is in the tingling state. I do remember that prior to this feeling I was having some issues with a dull pain in my neck and shoulder when carrying my backback or even my purse. When that went away, this feeling started. I do not feel it when laying down - only when standing or sitting. My thought was it is some type of muscle spasm and I was wondering if you ever took the suggestion for a massage before I spend money I really don't have. Thanks. Mary

A vague space occupying lession like feeling in my left flank often feels high (at base of rib cage) but sometimes lower. Not a kidney stone. Kidneys check out and I have had several and this isn't the same experience (though a previous post complaining of left lower flank pain wrapping around to their kidney is very suspect for a kidney stone.) My condition is possibly associated with a spinal issue because the paraspinal muscles and my lateral oblique muscles seem to be involved (hypertonic). I also feel bloated and have heartburn. I am probably 20 lbs over my ideal weight and most of that weight is abdominal. On percussion of the left upper quadrant I have noticed that the hyperresonant sound of the gastric air bubble seems to occupy a much larged area extending more laterally than it should. (Strangely Checking myself at the moment the hyperresonance seems to have shifted to the right upper quadrant laterally.) I first noticed this discomfort around 4 years ago and have had a couple strange incidents since. For a period of a couple weeks I felt hungery but stuffed and it really started to become very uncomfortable. Toward the end of this period I got very sick to my stomach and vommited violently for hrs but felt much better for a time after. This makes me think perhaps there is some type of obstruction or involusion present. Has anyone else out there suffered or treated a similar case?

  • I've been experiencing a bubbling sensation on my right side deep underneath my blade. Seems to happen randomly except for being exacerbated by laying a certain way, or alcohol or weed (which should make it better). But it happens whether I stand or sit and never feels quite right or stable. It may have something to do with my right collar bone popping out (they both do it) and weight shifting when the wrong parts take over for the wrong tasks. I'll occasionally feel like my muscles are out of control and have forgotten to do things all over, as though I never learned them, and upon impact, the whole right side of my back is number except for the deep bubbly pain. I'm maybe 30 pounds overweight and have some fatty liver sparring but the only thing that seemed to help was Kratom. I've switched to doing everything left-handed as much as possible and when I move certain ways there is definitely winging that I can no longer hold in. Also there is a lump where I feel the pain that is numb.

  • Wow it's amazing that we all have similar symptoms and no diagnosis. I had an MRI and it was clear no thing wrong with my back so now my PCP is checking my stomach area CT scan on Monday. I'll post again after I get the results.....
