Is it possible to misdiagnose arthritis in the hips, and later discover that it is cancer?

  • Your post really got to me. The answer to your question is... its definitely possible. The last thing I want to do is scare you but maybe if it does, it could possibly save your life. My mother (83 yrs old) was seeing a doctor in FL for years who diagnosed her with arthritis. It always nagged at us since the only thing they did for her was prescribe darvocet for the pain. She was taking 3 or more a day. Following the death of my father in 2007 we moved her to GA to be near us. She started seeing a wonderful doctor who was getting another problem, asthma, finally under control. (Yet another problem the doctor's in FL did nothing about). The doctor here wanted to schedule a routine colonoscopy but mom wanted to get the asthma under control first. Around Thanksgiving she was having problems going to the bathroom. We took her to the doctor who ordered a CT scan. Bottom line... it showed an obstruction in the colon. A colonoscopy was done and the biopsy revealed cancer. Mom had surgery on Dec 9, 2008 and passed away Dec 29, 2008. We hardly had time to absorb the cancer diagnosis nevermind her passing. We are devestated. I don't know much about you or your condition but I do know if you have any doubts or questions, you need to take charge and now! It cost my mother her life. We are convinced that had the doctors in FL done a colonoscopy years ago we would have had many more years with her. Her mother lived to be 99! Instead they simply wrote it off to arthritis because of her age. Our mother was the bravest person I've ever known. How she got to stage 4 matastisized colon cancer and never complained is beyond anything I can imagine. I am both angry and hurting over this. By the time we found out, it was too late. Don't let that happen to you. I pray that you have nothing to worry about.
