My brother has recently been diagnosed with an anal fistule or fistula.
He needs to have surgery within the next two months, but didnt really take in the options and outcomes, although a bag was mentioned, something that he is adamant that he doesnt want.
I have googled this condition and there is something called an Anal Fistula Plug (looks like a promotional site - Cook Medical).
Does anyone have any further information about this option or experiences of this condition?

  • Hi Linda, im sorry i cant recommend any other options for this but i can tell u what little i know about treatment offered. My friend had this & the only way they could treat the anal fistula successfully was to bypass it, that meant bringing the bowel out to the abdomen, this is called a colostomy.....u are left with a stoma which means u have to use a colostmy bag. When the anal fistula heals they then can reverse the operation. Im sure someone with medical knowledge can explain this better than me. I know it doesn't sound pleasant but it did work for my friend. Best Wishes :)

  • Thanks Tootsie, Thats helpful and perhaps explains why a bag was mentioned when I cant find any reference is web sites linked to the condition.I will pass this on to my brother. Its not a pleasant thought but if it can be reversed he might be more comfortable about it. Regards ..... Linda

  • Hi again Linda, google "Colostomy" then u will find out all u need to know, its done for many reasons, anal fistula is just one of them. The more relaxed & confident ur brother is when going in to have this done will help him to cope with it better & help him realise its a necessary evil & the overall reward will be treating the fistula & then reversing the colostomy, it might take 6 to 9mths for this, hopefully not any longer. Kind regards :)
