I don't know if I am posting this in the right section, but if someone could help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it. For some reason, I turn extremely red in the face and body. This has been happening to me a few years now, and I really just started noticing how red I turn. I don't know how or why it happens...and it's not just my face either, my neck, arms, and chest turn red as well. Sometimes, it's spontanious, and I just turn red for no reason whatsoever, and then there are other times when I get nervous, embarrassed, and I turn red. The weird thing is, is that I can be talking to someone that I am completely comfortable around and i'll turn red. So it's not just when i'm nervous, or embarrassed. But It happens soo quick, it takes like 1 second for my entire upper body to turn red. People get turned off when i turn red, and they quit talking to me or they look away so they aren't staring at this red faced person. But anyway, I don't smoke, drink, do drugs, and i'm not on any form of medication. This is really messing up my social life, and if there is anybody out there that can help, you would be a life saver. I'm 19 years old, and tryin to get through college and hold a job, and this problem of mine doesn't make it easy at all.

Please, someone help me out.

  • I have the same symptoms. It is nice to know that other people have experienced this. It can be all-consuming at times, because i will worry about it and wonder if I'm red. It makes me feel a little better to find out I'm not the only one.

  • Wow--this happens to me all the time, and i'm even more worried because i'm getting married in 6 months.. what would you do to prevent this from happening? I saw a dermatologist who suggested seeing a endocrinologist which i'm doing next week as she thought maybe it's something hormonal. I listened to a speaker the other day and notice a little by little her neck was getting blotchy.. she was a very good speaker--I really wanted to talk to her and see if she knew what it was from but i didn't want to embarass her. any advice???Thanks!I thought I was probably the only person in the world with this problem and over the past few years have been giving my Irish heritage the credit for it, even though none of my sisters seem to have it. Today was a perfect example of what a pain it is. I was in an interview that was otherwise going really well and all of the sudden I could feel my face getting really hot and my palms getting sweaty. It was very embarrassing and I am not expecting a call back. The hiring manager was looking at me like I was crazy. It also happens when I drink, when I speak or give a presentation, when I am embarrassed, on the phone, and sometimes for no reason at all. Does anyone have any information on surgeries or doctors that may be able to treat this problem. It's affecting my career.

  • Have any of you been checked for a Pheochromocytoma? It's a tumor of the adrenal glands (normally found on top of the kidneys) and can cause this sort of flushing. Usually also causes other symptoms like tremors, excessive sweating, racing heart (tachycardia), anxiety, headaches, etc. Tests are quite simple to have done: 24 hour urinary catacholamines and metanephrines or a serum catacholamines. Any doctor can prescribe them.

  • Pheo's are very rare and accompanied by sudden bouts of high blood pressure, rapid pulse, weight loss, and severe headaches. When I say high blood pressure, I mean going from 113/70 to 152/105 at random and laying down, relaxing,- nothing makes it go away. They are so rare that every hospital I have been to I have been swarmed by Dr's and their students. I tested positive on a 24 hour urine test, then my MRI was inconclusive, and then I was sent for a radioactive MIBG scan.

Usually when i get nervious my hands turn red. its really annoying i have to wear long sleve shirts to cover them i had this problem for several years doctors told me the same thing over ''use cream after you wash your hands'' but it never seems to work. when im home my hands are fine but when i go to school they all of a sudden turn red and when school ends and i come home there normal again. some people saw my hands and looked at me like im some kinda freak, im totally sick of it.

  • Not sure if it will help anyone but possibly some. I have a similar condition with turning red. I turn a bright red suddenly some times. It has happened on quite a few occasions, with people around me suddenly pointing to me and telling me that my face is bright red. I realized that I know when this happens, usually my skin feels hot and my breath feels warm. I have since found that, one of the best things to do at this time is drink some cold gatorade/water and then excuse yourself to the bathroom; cup your hands, fill it up with cold water and dip your nose in it as deep as you can and hold it for a few seconds. As soon as you pull your nose out, breath in deeply. Repeat at least twice. Do not hold your nose in the water for long or get out of breath doing so.Following this helped me a lot, hope it helps some of you...- Anand

  • I have a similar problem except everytime I find myself getting hot by doing something strenuous, such as lifting somthing heavy, my body starts to tingle and burn as well as turn red. It can also happen if i start to get nervous too. The common factor i see is that my body temp was raised slightly, which i think triggers it. The worse it starts to burn the more I start to freak out, thus just making it burn even worse. It lasts for about 10-20 min and its one of the worst burning/itching sensations I can imagine... very painful. Whenever this is happening my neck, face, back, stomach, chest, and inside of my arms all get really boodshot red and I also get these tiny little white bumps wherever its red (they look like the little white/clear blisters you get when you have a really bad sunburn). It takes me getting to a cool place and relaxing for it to go away. Does anyone know what this is because doctors can't figure it out? Please help!

  • Its amazing to actually hear about so many other people going through the same thing that I have been going through for years. It started back in junior high and ony occured when I was giving speeches in class but has now gotten worse and worse. I really dont think that my condition has anything to do with rosacea as some have stated though.Whether or not I am just sitting at home watching tv or talking to someone I have known for years my face flushes really red and burns really hot. At times it also moves down my neck and to my chest and arms. And has only recently started to affect my hands, as my fingers and half way down my hands swell, turn really red, and burn also. I am from a small town and dont really know anyone else that this affects so people always seem to feel the need to point this out. And job interviews are horrible. I am also fair skinned and have really low blood pressure so that isnt a factor. I went through a period when i thought that it may have been hot flashes from early menopause!! And I am only 25!! When I drink, even just a sip, the flushing is automatic within seconds from my cheeks to my arms and hands. I have always been told that it was just because my body wont process alcohol because just having one drink to many, it seems as thought my body reaks of alcohol the next moring as it seemed to only realease itself through my skin. But by reading what people have said on here I think there is alot more to it. When I exercise I turn so red Im almost purple looking. Sometimes it only affects one side of my face. I also sometimes feel as though I am giving off an amonia odor. I did this 21 day cleanse a few times recomended to me by a doctor (not for this condition) which cleanses out all your organs and blood. It only consisted of raw fruit and vegis, with protien shakes and green food cleanse pills. (No spices on food, no alcohol, and if your a smoker no smoking). After doing this I realised that I hadnt suffered from flushing for a couple of months and felt better than ever until I started back into my old eating habits and going out with friends again and then I had them right away and often. So I am wondering if this has anything to do with certain foods. Or maybe certian additives in processed food. I surely cant to the cleanse all the time! I hope there is an answer but I have pretty much given up!

  • Wow! I'm glad I'm not alone. I too get red splotches on my chest neck and upper arms and my face and ears get really hot. I don't think it is related to any medications or food or drink, as it seems to only happen when I get worked up about something or when I'm nervous. This makes me think it is my blood pressure rising, but I don't think high BP is the cause. I think High BP is the result of nerves and anger. It used to only happen when I cry, but now it happens anytime I get mad or upset. For instance, I can be driving home in the hot sun and think about something from the day that really gets my blood boiling and I can feel the splotches coming on. I know not everyone gets splotchy when they are mad, so why does it happen to us? It's terrible wearing a sleeveless shirt and this happening in front of a group of people. I always blame it on being hot. If anyone learns of a diagnosis or cure PLEASE share it with me.

  • hey everybody decided to look something up on redness in the face today, and came across this. It is kind of crazy that people have these symptoms. I have had this since i was 15 or 16 and now i am 23. i have learned to just deal with it i used to hold my head down because i didn't wan't people to see my red face, but now if i ever get embarassed and red in the face i will look at everyone, and act as if nothing is wrong. It does suck it is completely psychological and a matter of how much blood that area needs. it sounds like everybody has social phobia, which i think is what i have because i can control it sometimes if i really think hard about it. anyone with any awesome ideas though please report.

  • I also have a problem with blushing. I found dermablend corrective makeup works wonders. No one even knows that i have a problem. Also I recieved some laser treatments to treat the cappillaries close to the skin. With added confidence then the blushing will lessen.

  • my face goes red as well, i'm a pale, blond haird 29 yr old. My face goes super red after smoking weed, i think it's blood pressure changes. After reading a bunch of these posts, it's clear to say many things cause this "flushing of the skin". Each person has thier own set of variable which may or may not be a contributing factor. My question is when does this symptom become serious. When can u say holy **** i think something is up. by the way weed makes u paranoid as well :-DCheers A Canadian

  • please look into carcinoid or google carcinoid. Its one of the conditions that causes a flushing. NOt the splotchy chest like nerve thing many of us get but flushing from head to toe, a entire face blush that comes on say not from embarassement. It can make it appear as though you got a sunburn or suntan. Its something to consider.

  • Wow. I am so glad I found this site. I cried too! I'm really scared that this may be something a lot more serious than I though it was. I have been getting this random flushing since November 2007... so about 5 months now. It started right after I started to use YAZ birth control. I used that for a whole month starting early November. And by late november I remember getting my first flushing experience at work. I continued with the birth control because I didn't connect the two. I continued to get real flush sometimes... though at that time it was rarer. I thought it was just a phase my body was going through and would eventaully go away. After one month of the birth control I stopped using it because I didn't have the money to buy it. And when I stopped using it... I can't remember getting the flushing anymore. But I went back on it about a month later... and started to get the flushing really bad... I stopped the birth control after about two weeks... thinking that must have been why I was getting beat red in the face for no reason... or in heat... when i was embarrassed or mad.... But I still have it and it is getting to the end of March now! And it's gotten worse. I have recently been getting blotchy on my neck now too. I don't know if it was the birth control or not... but Its the only thing I could think of that could have caused it. But i've been off of it for so long now... and am still getting the flushing. I have been on several different acne medications though. I don't think they are the reason for this flushing. It isn't a side effect listed for any of the drugs I've tried to help my acne. Now I'm on Spironalactone for my acne. Which seems to be working great. I am gonna stick with this medication and I have been on it now for almost two months. Since I've gotten the flushing the only two medications other than Spironolactone that I used were Solodyn which is a name brand for minocycline (which I started at the same time I started the birth control... and only toke for about a month.) Then I started on Bactrim. I only stopped using it because it was a sulfur drug and I got a mild rash on my stomach from it. So I donno if those drugs could have anything to do with it.... but before I used Bactrim and before I used Spironolactone... I've had the flushing... so I def. don't think they are the cause. Maybe Solodyn???? Sigh. I'm so lost at what this could be. What is causing this. I'm so determined to get rid of this. It's so embarrassing and uncomfortable. My whole face gets beat red and my ears too and It's soooo hot. I feel like my face is on fire or something. I'm trying to get into college for next fall. I really want this to go away before I go. :-( I'm really worried this may be something serious. Like a tumor or lupus! I have had a tumor before... Called cholesteatoma when I was little. A cholesteatoma is a skin growth that occurs in an abnormal location, the middle ear behind the eardrum. It is usually due to repeated infection, which causes an ingrowth of the skin of the eardrum. Cholesteatomas often take the form of a cyst or pouch that sheds layers of old skin that builds up inside the ear. Over time, the cholesteatoma can increase in size and destroy the surrounding delicate bones of the middle ear. Hearing loss, dizziness, and facial muscle paralysis are rare but can result from continued cholesteatoma growth.I had a really bad ear infection back in October. They said I didn't have another tumor. But since then it did get better with the medicine they gave me. But lately It's been hurting and also fluid has been running from my ear. The same ear I had the tumor in before. Soooo.... I donno if that could have anything to do with this flushing either. I'm just thinking up all of the things it could be... I'm going to the Doctor Wednesday March 26th. I have a physical. And i'm gonna print out this forum and the information I found on this site : http://www.clevelandclinicmeded.com/medicalpubs/diseasemanagement/endocrinology/flushing/flushing.htmAnd take it with me to the doctor and tell him/her (possibly cry to him/her) to please help me get rid of this embarrasing random flushing. It's so upsetting and scary. I can't stand this anymore. I Will def. post what the doctor has to say. And if he gives me any medicine to try... or anything else. I hope I can really finda cure for this. I'm gonna ask about the Paxil CR. (used for the treatment of aniexty) Maybe it is just a hormonal thing... and I've developed aniexty... that causes the flushing. Maybe this will be all I need. That would surely be great news for me. PLEASE PLEASE post on her if anyone has found something that worked for them. It would be soooo helpful and really appreicated. Thank You KARYN

And yes, it can cause a rash and flushing as a side effect. Plus, this drug is for High blood pressure - it is a strong diuretic...this drug can cause high potassium levels in your blood, which is a potentially dangerous condition. Please get your potassium levels checked by your doc! Please post ALL meds you are currently on. Please consider a more holistic approach to treating your flushing, as medications like paxil are just going to cause more side effects! I cannot stress this enough: DOCTORS DON'T CHECK FOR SIDE EFFECTS OF DRUGS OR INTERACTIONS OF DRUGS. All drugs have side effects, some of them severe (yasmin is very scary for instance). Please be an educated consumer and visit www.drugs.com or www.rxlist.com to find out all of the possible side effects of a drug you may be taking. Best wishesDOM

  • I'm sorry we all have this, but it's nice to finally find other people with it. I thought it was all in my head. I work outside and when I come in, even on a slightly cool day (worse on a really cold day - Alberta) my face lights on fire and turns the deepest shade of red! People always ask what's wrong etc. It's better if my face is covered completely, but still... It can happen at any other time as well.I don't smoke, drink, do drugs, am not on birth control (at least not since I was 19 - I'm, 31 now) This only started happening 5 years ago and I've been told I have Rosasea too but after talking with someone who actually has it, have determined that's not it.I've cut foods out, excercised more, less, tried moisturizing, not moisturizing, other moisturizers and not a lot actually has helped, long term anyway. So then, has anyone found a name or cure at this point? I'm going to try the ice on the pulse, can't hurt that's for sure!

  • I have the same thing going on... I'm a 24 year old female and it's been going on for about a year. It seems like it got progressively worse for me... I think it started with my face and has turned into whole body. I believe mine is related to food. It seems to happen within 10 minutes or so after eating. My regular doctor, dermatologist, endocrinologist, and gastroenterologist couldn't find anything wrong. I did have someone suggest it could be a reaction to "tyramine" which i researched a little online and it is an amino acid found in aged cheeses, processed foods, etc. I'm seeing an allergist tomorrow so i'll let you guys know if i find out any more info. I'm glad to know i'm not alone :)
