Chronic Hives + Xzyal?

Hi All,

I've had chronic hives pretty much my whole life (I'm 26 now). They come on strong, last for 6-8 weeks than disappear...only to return a few months/weeks later.

I have been allergy tested 4 times. I do have some allergies, but they are controlled with Allegra (dust, mold, pollen).

I do not have any food allergies.

I do have one medicinal allergy - sulfer (sulfa?) drugs.

I'm currently in the midst of one of the worst cases of hives I've had. I am literally *covered* from the neck down!

I went through all the usual suspects:
*Shampoo / Conditioner
*Fabric Softener
*House Cleaners
*Exotic or Foreign foods to my current palette
*Work scents

I even tried changing both my diet (cut processed foods and caffeine), and my exercise routine (added yoga).

Nothing has helped.

I haven't switched jobs...moved...switched boyfriends...nothing!

I'm not even stressed.

So, my doctor gave me two options:

1. Prednisone. I am SUPER against this option because of all the side effects.

2. Xyzal. She gave me 5 samples...and AMAZINGLY - they worked right away! No hives! Then the bad news....not covered by my health insurance. So, it will cost me $150 a month.

This is a huge expense...but a worthwhile one if there is long term success.

Has anyone else gone this route for chronic hives? Is it working?

Much thanks,

  • I too was prescrbed Xzyal for chronic hives, and it works! However, my doctor said you can try just about any other kind of antihistamine, even over-the-counter, and you will probably have success as well. I now use a generic OTC (cetrizine) and it seems to work. Just wish I could get rid of the hives for good!!!! I am 47 and have had hives off and on for the past 8 or 9 years. When they're "on" they last for months at a time. Yuck.

  • Hi there,I suffered from chronic hives for over 3 months (which I know isn't that long compared to many of youbut it felt like years) and YES I cured (or at least very successfully treated) them and they went away. I firmly believe my hives (and most peoples chronic hives) are due to CANDIDA (a systemic yeast infection). I went on the Candida diet, but that is just one step...I was on supplements to kill the hives too. I got tested through a HOLISTIC doctor who did a test called Electrodermal Screening and it worked. She put me on a program and my hives got better within a month, and were completely gone within 6. There IS no overnight cure and there is no magic pill to make them go away. I went to an allergist and a dermatologist who gave me creams, steroid shots and pills and every antihistimine you could name...nothing helped. All they try to do is bandaid it, and it doesn't work. Please visit my website (it is just one I made to tell people my story in order to help them) at sugarloverscandidadiet.wordpress.com and it will explain more. Please contact me there with any questions. Your hives ARE probably caused by Candida...it takes a lot of work to get rid of them, but they SHOULD go away Good luck!

  • I have had chronic hives for 3 years now and the only thing that keeps them under control is the Xzyal! This medicine has been a life saver for me. The Zertec and Allegra and everything else worked for a while (3 months or so) but then quit and it was fustrating. I have been on EVERY antihistimine out there and coctails of them. I was a walking zombie because I was on so many. I've been taking Xzyal for a year and half now and only have minor flair ups if I forget to take it for a couple of days. This medicine saved my relationship and my life. I wanted to die the itching was so bad. All I did was itch and break out. The only time I was comfortable was when I slept so I did a lot of that which makes for no life. I went to 3 different Allergists, my Primary Care, a Dermetologist, and a Naturalpath. I am allergic to things but nothing abnormal dust adn a couple of different types of trees. I will keep taking this medicine till the day it keeps working or I find a new doctor that is willing to do more tests but I think I've pretty much run almost every test out there with no luck. They have even checked me for all auto-immune diseases and nothing showed up.
